Little Talks
Monsters & Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Hey, hey, hey)

I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as you sleep
It's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
And some days I can't even dress myself
It's killing me to see you this way

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

(Hey, hey, hey)

There's an old voice in my head
That's holding me back
Well, tell her that I miss our little talks
Soon it will be over and buried with our past
We used to play outside when we were young
And full of life and full of love
Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right
Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

(Hey)
Don't listen to a word I say
(Hey)
The screams all sound the same
(Hey)

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore (hey, hey)

You're gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you
Now we're torn, torn, torn apart
There's nothing we can do
Just let me go, we'll meet again soon

Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep

(Hey)
Don't listen to a word I say
(Hey)
The screams all sound the same
(Hey)

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Don't listen to a word I say
(Hey)
The screams all sound the same
(Hey)

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Little Talks by Monsters & Men depict an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. The singer doesn't like the old and empty house they inhabit, and the creaking stairs are keeping them awake. The ominous feeling is heightened by the suggestion that the house is telling the singer to close their eyes. The singer's partner is also struggling, and it's killing the singer to see them that way. However, the refrain provides a glimmer of hope: "though the truth may vary, this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore". Despite the uncertainty and fear, the couple trusts that they will survive whatever troubles they face.

The second verse adds more pieces to the puzzle, but the sense of unease persists. An "old voice" in the singer's head is holding them back, and they miss their "little talks" with this voice. The singer also refers to playing outside when young, hinting that innocence and happiness are things of the past. The chorus repeats the message of the first one, but with the addition of nightmarish screams that "all sound the same". The final verse takes on a mournful tone, as the singer addresses someone who has gone away and left only a ghost behind. The couple is torn apart, and the singer can do nothing but wait for a reunion that will only come in sleep.

My Grandma is about to die of COVID-19 tonight or tomorrow.
She has also been suffering from dementia for years. Her husband, 92, will survive her.
I cant help but match nearly every lyric in this whole song to their situation.
The husband in the song is unable to tell her that he is there for her even though she cant see him.
My Grandma didn't see her husband for 7 weeks because of mandatory isolation cause she tested positive.
(they were finally re-united briefly in the ICU today once the doctors realized they couldn't save her)

Grandma: Some days I can't even trust myself (not remembering who anyone is)
Papa: It's killing me to see you this way
Grandma: There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back (dementia)
Papa: Well tell her that I miss our little talks (when they used to be able to have meaningful conversations)
Grandma: Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right (not knowing what she is doing)
Papa: Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear
Grandma: Don't listen to a word I say
The screams all sound the same
Papa: You're gone, gone, gone away (watching her slip into dementia)
I watched you disappear (not being able to see her because of iso)
All that's left is the ghost of you (their memories of each other)
Grandma: Now we're torn, torn, torn apart (missing him in iso)
There's nothing we can do (It's over, I'm dying)
Just let me go we'll meet again soon (In heaven)
Papa: Now wait, wait, wait for me (when he met her today in the ICU)
Please hang around (wishing this wasn't his final goodbye)
Grandma: I'll see you when I fall asleep

Both: Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Goodbye Grandma, we love you.

Edit: The doctors told us 24-48 hours was all she had but she held on for 6 days.
My grandfather got to visit her quite a few times for a couple of final Little Talks.

Every comment on old or sad songs:

"[current year] anyone?"

"We don't search for old songs...
We search for old memories"

"'When you're happy, you enjoy the melody, when you're sad you understand the lyrics"

"[amount of years since the song was released] years and it still hits just the same."

"I doubt anyone will ever read this comment, but if you do then remember that someone loves you and that you are important."

True story. First time I heard this song I was working at a goodwill store. I wrote down "we're torn torn torn apart" quickly so I could look up this song after work. I got the meaning the first time I heard it (my moms a widow, the vibes are obvious and sad) and had to hear it again. Here I am several years later still loving this song.

i hope those were tears of happiness :)
