Jordan attended Pepperdine University in California to pick up a bachelor's degree in communications, graduating summa cum laude and was a state finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Jordan's first single was the 1995 #1 hit single "This Is How We Do It", and defined his hip hop soul musical style. "This Is How We Do It" and its follow-up, "Somethin' 4 Da Honeyz", show a strong hip hop influence, and Jordan's material fit alongside the rest of Def Jam's output. Future hits would include "Let's Ride" with Master P in 1998 and "Get It on Tonite" in late-1999.
Besides crafting his own material, Jordan has written and produced for a number of outside artists, including Christina Milian, 98 Degrees, Deborah Cox ("Nobody's Supposed to Be Here", 1998), and SisqΓ³ (the number-one hit "Incomplete", 2000). The singer has had cameo roles in the films "The Fighting Temptations" and "The Nutty Professor."
Jordan left Def Soul in 2003 and released the album "Life After Def" on Koch Records.
Jordan released his 7th project - "Let It Rain" - on October 21, 2008.
In 2010, Jordan left the music business to become a minister. As he explained on his Twitter feed, the decision is "a calling thatβs probably been with me all my life since I was a child. And Iβve known it. A lot of people in the business know it and have the same calling but that leap of faith is difficult."
Can I
Montell Jordan Lyrics

So I'm
What about
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby?
Come on baby
Can I, can I have breakfast in bed?
Can we share a sunrise together?
Where are you sleeping, baby
What are you doing, honey
When are you leaving, I gotta know?
Not talking dirty, baby
But it's 1 30 AM
And neither one of us needs to be alone
So can I?
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby, can I?
Can I have breakfast in Bed?
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise, can I?
This is the last dance, baby
Could be our last chance
And we may not see one another ever again
So I'll sing into your ear mama
While everyone does the cha-cha
Until we're lovers, can we pretend?
So can I?
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby, can I?
Can I have breakfast in Bed?
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise, can I?
Baby can I?
Can I, can I baby?
Oh baby, can I? (Oh)
Please baby can I?
(Need to know now)
Can I, can I baby?
Oh baby, can I? (oh yeah)
Please baby can I?
(Baby won't you tell me can I?)
Can I, can I baby?
Oh baby, can I? (Oh)
Please baby can I?
(Baby tell me can I?)
Can I, can I baby?
Oh, baby, can I?
It's on tonight, lady please can I?
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby, can I?
Can I have breakfast in Bed?
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise, can I?
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby, can I?
Can I have breakfast in Bed?
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise, can I?
Can I tuck you in?
Can I fluff your pillow?
Can I sing you a lullaby, can I?
Can I have breakfast in Bed?
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise, can I?
Breakfast in bed
Can I give you that feeling?
Can I show you the sunrise?
Can I?
Can I show you the sunrise?
Can I?
The lyrics of Montell Jordan's song "Can I?" speak to the desire to be with someone intimately and to experience small, romantic gestures that make a big impact. The singer of the song asks their love interest if they can tuck them in, fluff their pillow, and sing them a lullaby before asking if they can have breakfast in bed and share a sunrise together. The singer explains that it's late at night, neither of them needs to be alone, and this could potentially be the last time they see each other. They want to pretend to be lovers until it becomes reality.
On the surface, the lyrics of the song portray a romantic and intimate moment between two individuals. However, the urgency and desperation in the singer's voice suggest that there is a deeper longing for intimacy and connection. This is further highlighted by the lyrics "Can I give you that feeling?" as if the singer wants to create a special moment that can be remembered for a lifetime. This song speaks to the core human need for intimacy and desire for someone to share life's beautiful moments with.
