Jordan attended Pepperdine University in California to pick up a bachelor's degree in communications, graduating summa cum laude and was a state finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Jordan's first single was the 1995 #1 hit single "This Is How We Do It", and defined his hip hop soul musical style. "This Is How We Do It" and its follow-up, "Somethin' 4 Da Honeyz", show a strong hip hop influence, and Jordan's material fit alongside the rest of Def Jam's output. Future hits would include "Let's Ride" with Master P in 1998 and "Get It on Tonite" in late-1999.
Besides crafting his own material, Jordan has written and produced for a number of outside artists, including Christina Milian, 98 Degrees, Deborah Cox ("Nobody's Supposed to Be Here", 1998), and SisqΓ³ (the number-one hit "Incomplete", 2000). The singer has had cameo roles in the films "The Fighting Temptations" and "The Nutty Professor."
Jordan left Def Soul in 2003 and released the album "Life After Def" on Koch Records.
Jordan released his 7th project - "Let It Rain" - on October 21, 2008.
In 2010, Jordan left the music business to become a minister. As he explained on his Twitter feed, the decision is "a calling thatβs probably been with me all my life since I was a child. And Iβve known it. A lot of people in the business know it and have the same calling but that leap of faith is difficult."
Yes
Montell Jordan Lyrics

This song goes out to anyone out there
Who has been fighting temptation?
Verse I
The ice was so thin
Where I was skating
I heard you calling me and
Does anybody out there
Know what I'm saying
Do you hear God's voice?
And keep him waiting
Pre-chorus
When everything
I ever needed
I can't believe that
You provided, the moment I said
Chorus
Yes, that's what you said
That's what you told me
You called my name
I said yes
Yes to your will
You know what's best for me
All of my life I'll say yes
Verse II
It was me, myself and I
And I admit it
But the truth is
Without you Lord
I can forget it
I'm so thankful (thankful)
For the love you gave me (you gave me)
Guess I'll never know (never know)
Why you forgave me
Pre-chorus
When everything
I ever needed
I can't believe that
You provided, the moment I said
Chorus
Bridge
Yes yes yes
Yes (don't know what to do)
Yes (I give it all to you)
Yes
Repeat chorus, adlib, vamp, and end
In Montell Jordan's song "Yes", he addresses the struggle of resisting temptation and delaying answering to God's calling. In the first verse, he describes the thin ice he is skating on as he hears God calling him but "kept procrastinating". He then questions if anyone can relate to this temptation, and if anyone else hears God's voice but puts him on hold. The pre-chorus and chorus represent a breakthrough in Montell Jordan's spiritual journey, as he recognizes that God has provided him with everything he needs, and he says "yes" to God's will and all he has in store for him.
Verse two acknowledges that without God, Montell Jordan would lose his way and forget everything he knows to be true. He is thankful for God's love and forgiveness, even though he will never fully understand it. The bridge then simply repeats the word "yes" several times, signifying complete surrender and trust in God's plan for his life.
