Montreal
Montreal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Montreal is
Where I began to feel inside
The gray sadness of winter.
When you told me that this isn't it,
And I drove away.

Walking to the statue in the park,
Through snow drifts up over our knees,
And every street sign written in French.
We sat by the statue.
You looked in my eyes,
Then said, "I'm so sorry."

Later, laying on your bed,
Wondering what's going wrong.
Every time I'd ask you'd start crying,
And whisper, "I don't know why,
I only know what I feel,
What a voice says to me"

I may be here now
But I've never left Montreal

Overall Meaning

In Montreal, the singer reflects on their time in the city and the emotions they experienced during their stay. The song starts with a poetic portrayal of how Montreal made them feel. The singer talks about the winter and the gray sadness that they felt. It's not entirely clear what made them feel this way, but it seems to be related to a conversation they had with someone. This conversation seems to have ended a relationship or caused a significant emotional shift, causing the singer to drive away from Montreal.

The singer then recounts a walk through a park, where they and their companion went to see a statue. The setting is picturesque, but the language used suggests that the walk was not an easy one, with snow drifts up to their knees. The fact that every street sign is written in French also indicates a sense of foreignness or otherness, perhaps adding to the singer's feeling of alienation. Amidst this walk, the companion apologizes, suggesting some sort of reconciliation or closure.

The song culminates in a scene where the singer and their companion are lying on a bed, with the singer trying to figure out what went wrong. Their companion begins to cry and says that they don't know why things happened the way they did, only that they were following an inner voice. The last line of the song is a poignant one, as the singer declares that though they may not be physically present in Montreal anymore, they have never truly left it behind.
