The look in my eye was here to stay
You know I laugh too much to be real
It's only a screen to hide what I feel
Night thoughts
Night thoughts
Night thoughts are killing me
Closing day drifts into night
Things in my head don't come out right
How you used and cleverly took
What freedom I owned in just one look
Night thoughts
Night thoughts
Night thoughts are killing me
Moon Martin's song Night Thoughts explores the theme of a waning dream and the internal struggles that come with it. The opening lines immediately set the tone for the song, with the singer realizing that their dream is fading away. The look in their eye is "here to stay," suggesting that they have resigned themselves to the loss of their dream. The singer admits to "laugh[ing] too much to be real," which can be interpreted as a defense mechanism to hide their true feelings. This conveys a sense of sadness and a disconnect from their true self.
The chorus, with its repetition of the line "Night thoughts are killing me," highlights the agony that the singer is going through. The verse that follows talks about the singer's inability to express themselves adequately. The phrase "things in my head don't come out right" is an admission that they are not able to communicate their thoughts and feelings properly. The verse ends with a reference to a person who took the singer's freedom with just one look.
Overall, Night Thoughts is a haunting and poignant song that explores the internal struggles of a person dealing with a lost dream. The lyrics are introspective, with vivid images and metaphors that convey a sense of hopelessness and confusion.
