The Fog
Moonface Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He dreams that Neptune is a prophet
And Jupiter a healer
And so wakes up thinking they are more than stars
And he cannot tell the difference
Between a heartbeat and a wave
He has a bad, bad sense of time
And she's a queen
She gives beyond her means
To pure to see through his raggedy disguise
She cannot tell the difference
Between a photograph of lovers on a beach
And a man in rags and feathers in the trees
She says, "don't tie the blindfold quite so tight this time"
He says, "don't love me to death and I won't love you to death"
She says, "I won't love you to death if you don't love me to death"
He says, "I won't tie the blindfold quite so tight this time"
And then he takes her by the elbow
Back down towards the sea
Where they become
Two very old and senile sailors
Going in and going out
And going in and going out
And going in and going out
Of the fog
Going in
And going out again
And going in
And going out again
Going in
And going out again
And going in and going out
And going in and going out
And going in
And going out again
Going in
And going out again
Going in and going out
And going in and going out
And going in

And going out again
Of the fog

Overall Meaning

The Fog by Moonface speaks about dreams and perception. The singer dreams that Neptune and Jupiter are more than just stars, that they are prophets and healers, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. He also has a bad sense of time and cannot tell the difference between a heartbeat and a wave. On the other hand, his partner is depicted as a queen who is too pure to see through his ragged disguise. She is unable to differentiate between a photograph of lovers on a beach and a man in rags and feathers in the trees. Despite this, they both have communication, compromise and understanding in their relationship. They are both aware that their love can be suffocating to the point of death, and they are taking steps to prevent this from happening. They agree to loosen restrictions and not tie the blindfold as tightly as before. They proceed on their journey by the sea, where they become two old and senile sailors who come in and out of the fog.

The song speaks volumes about perception, understanding, and love. Neptune and Jupiter's dream represents the blurry, peripheral and subjective nature of dreams, which cannot be easily integrated into reality. The singers' personalities showcase the different ways of viewing the world, with one having an imaginative mind, while the other is too pure, blinding her from seeing what is beneath the surface. Lastly, the senile sailors show the aging that comes with time passing, where memory and perception may start to become more entangled.

LYRICS

He dreams that Neptune is a prophet and Jupiter, a healer
And so wakes up thinking they are more than stones

And he cannot tell the difference between a heartbeat and a wave
He has a bad, bad sense of time

And she's a queen, she gives beyond her means
Too pure to see through his raggedy disguise

She cannot tell the difference between a photograph of lovers on a beach and a man in rags and feathers in the trees

She says, "Don't tie the blindfold quite so tight this time"
He says, "Don't love me to death and I won't love you to death"
She says, "I won't love you to death if you don't love me to death"
He says, "I won't tie the blindfold quite so tight this time"

And then he takes her by the elbow, back down towards the sea where they become two very old and senile sailors
Going in and going out, and going in and going out, and going in and going out of the fog

Going in and going out again
Going in and going out again
Going in and going out again
And going in and going out, and going in and going out, and going in and going out again
Going in and going out again
And going in and going out, and going in and going out, and going in and going out again of the fog

Some of Krug's best lyrics for sure.

Mattydigs

I've been waiting years for him to drop the greek allusion stuff.

Orbulas

Mattydigs Well, your wait is over, Jupiter and Neptune are the Romanized versions of Poseidon and Zeus, respectively.
And beyond the smug symantic distinction I pointed out, he is not really referencing the  Greco/Roman myth so much as the "Stars" that now bare their names, beyond that he makes specific reference to the portents of these celestial bodies as it applies to the beliefs of the character he's singing about, which leads me to believe that he is actually referencing these objects as they pertain to the Western Zodiac, which has as much to do with the Alchemy/Gnosticism/Aristotle/Hellenic and Medieval cosmology as an intrinsic connection to Greek Mythology.
Moreover, Neptune is not a prophet in any of those traditions and Jupiter far from a healer.
What I believe he's singing about does not actually concern Greek myth at all but rather certain maladities of mind and belief and judgement that these two lovers seem have in common... "he cannot tell the difference between a heartbeat and a wave", "has a bad, bad sense of time" and "she cannot tell the difference between two lovers on the beach and a man in rags and feathers in the trees"
I think the Greek references are incidental and used to represent a Fog of the mind.
No doubt he has employed a great deal of symbolism over the years (Actually he's been trying to estue his habits of abstraction and obfuscation for a while now) but working with archetypes makes it very difficult to avoid centuries of trod territory like the Greeks, the Abrahamic religions (Noah and Mary are mentioned quite explcitily on his last LP) or some other familiar symbols (Hungry Ghosts = Buddhist)
He could sing about Star Wars, Comic Books, A Song of Ice and Fire or Mad Men if he wanted to stay fresh... it's all better than Zep or Rush songs about Middle Earth or renigging on his recent lyrics and deciding that he has found Jesus and wants to sing prog-rock songs about the Dragon of Revelations instead of the Dragon in the Mountain.
A concept record about Smaug vs the Dragon in the book of rev might be good!
