When I was a kid, I thought history was the most boring subject, dry textbooks pontificating about long-dead men in dusty powdered wigs. As an adult, I love history because it helps me to understand how we got where we are now.

Can you imagine working 12 hours a day in the heat of those mills? Non stop. I’m a retired nurse who worked 12-14 hour days many days in a row and yes we got tired but we didn’t have to work in the heat! God bless them!

Are "we" allowing it? Or just going along with the flow? I guess that depends on where you are in your life? I was offered 4 scholarships at my early 40's to attend Veterinary school in Georgia. I was was not doing what I wanted and had dreamed of...I had attended a Jr. College and later Florida State University in Tallahassee...I did well scholastically, just had difficulty finding a job that would pay bills as I attended school.I had Studied Human Services and was currently taking Crisis Couselling and Crisis Intervention and enjoyed the classes for the most part and suddenly found myself involved with a tri county crisis Intervention team and it was interesting but the system was not working properly for the people being served. I was busy and not very satisfied with the way that things were done and why the pay was so bad for the work being done. The judicial system in Florida was a big problem especially when the juveniles were involved and I found myself discussing a problem with a judge that had sentenced a 9 year old who was breaking in to apartments and homes to steal food for her siblings and had been a prostitute trying to make money for groceries...she was innocent in ways that had her taken advantage of by people who were supposed to help her family and did not and the system had failed her and her family and many others as well.

@Linda Deal I'm pretty sure there's more to the story than a 9-year-old innocently breaking into homes so she can have enough money to feed her siblings. It sounds like the family had a history of being on welfare for decades, and this is the end result.If that's true that's such an extreme case, America still the greatest country in the world. It's not perfect by any means, but I wouldn't live anywhere else.

@who knows It's virtually impossible to move out of poverty in what you term the "greatest country in the world - America". Yes there are people who move out of welfare, and even into the vanishing middle class, but they are the exceptions.
Welfare particularly in the US means a permanent impoverished existence for the majority of recipients, with little liifesyle choices.

There is a quote at the beginning of this, "we are the rich; we own America; we got it, God knows how, but we intend to keep it if we can." I think it is important to remember that the particular dude who said this, Frederick Townsend Martin, was rich, yes, but was an advocate for the poor and in many ways a crusader against the rich. The full quote shows it's actually supposed to be a criticism of the rich and corrupt "bought" politics/politicians:

"It matters not one iota what political party is in power or what President holds the reins of office. We are not politicians or public thinkers; we are the rich; we own America; we got it, God knows how, but we intend to keep it if we can by throwing all the tremendous weight of our support, our influence, our money, our political connections, our purchased Senators, our hungry Congressmen, our public-speaking demagogues into the scale against any legislature, any political platform, any presidential campaign that threatens the integrity of our estate."

When I was in college my american history professor talked about all of political undertones in The Wizard of Oz. The yellow brick road was the gold standard, the silver slippers (changed to rudy slippers in the movie) was the silver standard, the tin woodsman was industrial interests, the strawman was the agricultural interests. Of course being rebellious teenagers we took things to the next level and asked what the flying monkeys meant and what the munchins meant and what this and that meant, just to wind him up.

I agree. As kid I loved the Carnegie aquarium of Cincinnati (which is actually in Kentucky for some complicated reasons). Unlike most aquariums this one has tunnels going through the tanks. They're transparent so your surrounded by the fish etc. Really a very special place and a tribute to a fascinating man.

Fantastic documentary of a period in our history that I knew little about. I was fascinated with the story of the 1896 election; the photos of William Jennings Bryan on the hustings were quite amazing. The 1896 Democratic Convention must have been riveting to those in attendance. On a lesser note, I was appalled at the hideous appearance of J.P. Morgan. He was truly a very ugly person, all his Gilded Age accomplishments aside.

The fact that in 1 night, the elite of the city spent enough money to feed 1000 working class families - for an entire year. Especially knowing that in this time-period, children died from cold and starvation. I don’t know how a person could just ignore that fact and value their societal image over the literal life of an innocent child. Unfortunately that same mentality still exists today. Money is more important than human life.

I've come to believe that great wealth cannot be achieved without the exploitation of someone. And I think exploitation is only possible when "we" think we are better than/different from "them". Until the concept of "we" are deserving and "they" are not, is changed, inequality will continue to exist.

In Pittsburgh, on Grant Street near 5th Ave. is an historical marker commemorating Henry Clay Frick for his "controversial management style which led to the bloody Homestead strike". I found it so astounding that his exploitive practices could be distilled down to a "contoversial management style".

In Tyler, Texas where I live, there is a place nearby ( less than 2 hour drive) called Jefferson. It is somewhat remote, that is what saved it as a historical village. It was where cotton was shipped out toward steamships. The topography of wild forest and rain soaked sloshes of land was navigated for trade routes with Tyler. Then the railroad was 'tapped' into Tyler, an extension of sorts, beginning in the 1870's and running in the 1880's. The Jefferson waterway navigation taking cotton and goods to Louisiana was no longer needed, so Jefferson stayed much as it was then. It is a fascinating place. I believe Ladybird Johnson was born there.

In Tyler, eastern European Jews immigrated and settled during the building of the railroad. There is a brick lined street in Tyler that, back in the 1880's, contained a kosher butcher, an orthodox church, etc. The eastern European orthodox Jewish leaders were planning on making the street area 'Zion', but a faction of the group wanted to be allowed to intermarry outside the faith. This led to a fractured split, and Zion never happened. Unfortunately, there is really no historical marker or dedication about this, I only found out when I did research and located information passed along vaguely. Geographically, Tyler is not a very large community, and it is somewhat isolated before freeways and highways. It really surprised me to learn about it, because the cultural heritage seems overwhelmingly Southern Baptist. For such a smaller community, and all information I have discovered that would fill a book, about a lot of other cultures and back rounds of early citizens, it was a real melting pot of various creeds of people. All because of the railroad.

I just spent about a month and a half around Winslow, Arizona. I visited a museum there and just as I suspected the only reason that town is there is because of the railroad. Same in Holbrook. The famous corner that the Eagles immortalized in Take It Easy is right by the railroad. I do nothing but travel and it is amazing that you might see a whole lot of nothing then suddenly a clearly defined small town appears. If it wasn't for the RR I wonder what America would look like. This just doesn't exist in Europe where towns were in place long before the RR was invented.

PBS comes through with a glimpse of our past brightly illuminating that America and her people are STILL struggling to close the gap between exorbitant wealth (and the power it wields) and everyone else trapped on the wheel making that wealth possible.
This country is as divided as it ever was.
We aren't just teetering on the verge of economic disaster, but social upheaval and global conflict are also pressing down on us. There isn't an area in America's social structures that isn't in dire need of reform: education, corrections and law enforcement, lending and banking, the environment, and perhaps most of all, ELECTIONS.
Until we, the people, decide to clean house and stop voting against our self interest, this American experiment will fail. And the people poised to take the helm from us have already shown us how nefarious their intentions are...

The fact that many employers do not pay a living wage or give a damn about their employees hasn't changed at all! Some used to but that has gone back down hill. My grandfathers and my Dad were more valued and got more money and benefits from their employers. It's insane right now and has been for years and only getting worse! My paternal grandfather only finished 8th grade then worked at a rubber company the rest of his life until he retired. He could afford to support a stay at home wife and 2 kids, have a house and a nice car and anything his family needed. He had insurance from work! I worked during college and graduated with a Bachelor's degree and I can afford NONE of those things! There is something VERY wrong with that! A college degree was supposed to allow hard working people to have a better job, not just a job but it doesn't even help you get a shitty paying job or any job at all in many cases today!

My father was a veteran and he earned a salary that helped to raise a family…..he paid for private schools…….he was disabled at sixty due to exposure to asbestos from his job……and then when he was eighty years old they said he didn’t pay enough taxes on his veteran pension so they charged him thousands of dollars and my mother is still paying……..our governments have ALL FAILED…….GLOBAL BANKING AND CORPORATIONS HAVE DESTROYED HUMAN CIVILIZATION AND COMPROMISED THE REST OF LIFE ON EARTH…….LOVELY………

I believe the commentator’s conclusion on Carnegie asking himself, “Why me?” is a single piece of paper among many in a hat. Carnegie was more than an “intellect”. I take it he was a smart, disciplined, complex, and spiritually philosophical. Proffering single conclusion is pedantically misleading in it’s over simplicity.

Carnegie couldn't understand how underpaying workers and cutting costs could cause himself to become extremely wealthy...hmm. Doubt he worried if his workers were used up any more than his machinery. He would likely just get more of either. Some of the longest running companies are the ones where the workers are treated well and give ideas and skills to the company that takes care of them.

Bought most of the land on the street I grew up on! Paying his help in the beginning with food spaghetti n meatballs. And piece work the farm 🙏🏻

You can make more flipping burgers than taking care of someone??? I have an associates degree in MA and starting wage is between 8 and 10 dollars an hour!! 30 grand for school yet starting wage won't even pay your rent???

My grandparents were part of the Great Migration. They left the south for Philadelphia. They didn't know anyone in the city. But they went anyway. It must have suited them because they stayed...in their new home.

The repercussions of the Great Migration are fascinating and sad at the same time. While many did find better opportunities in factories in the North, the practices of redlining really took hold and the ensuing hyper-urbanization that still has ripples through the problems of inner cities today reared their ugly head as well. I am glad that your grandparents seemed to have had a good experience 😊
