The verses of Moreau's song "Sadness" depict a man on the verge of a breakdown. He pours himself another drink, and the weight of his pain is visible on his face. Once, there was a flicker of something sweet there, but it has been gone for some time. The singer tells us that deep inside, the man is driven by a persistent madness, a force that has consumed him from the inside out.
The chorus returns to the metaphor of rain, which the man apparently feels powerless to stop.
