Back in Town
Moriarty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I woke up in the middle of the night
And got up in a rush of blood
Splattering myself in the fight
And I crawl to the ground
And I crawl for fear of the drown
It's my own little war The one I'm ready to wage
So don't stand in the way
If you don't want to get hurt
My baby and me
We're having more than just a flirt
My baby's back in town
I can feel his roaming around
Well my baby's back in town
I'm moving out on the outskirts of town
I think I'm kissing the sink
And the sickness is a sticking my insides
I'm seeking a kick from the thickness of the quicksands
In which I dive
I'm sick I'm sucking on a pill
A sweet and sour lick of salt
I know I'm hooked but I'd kill
Anyone who says it's just my fault
I see his skinny silhouette
In the distance I can hear his call
My soul is no longer at home
Since my baby came and took it all
So don't stand in the way
If you don't want to get hurt
My baby and me
We're having more than just a flirt
My baby's back in town
I can feel his roaming around
My baby's back in town
There's no more fooling around
Mess around, mess around
Mess around, mess around
The song "Back in Town" by Moriarty deals with the theme of love addiction, in which the singer seems to be struggling with her own obsession towards her partner. The first verse describes a physical fight that the singer has with herself in the middle of the night, perhaps indicating the internal struggle she has with her emotions. She then fears drowning in her own feelings, suggesting that her obsession is consuming her. However, she admits that this is her own battle and that she is willing to fight it.
The second verse describes the singer's physical and emotional sickness. She is not only addicted to her partner but also to drugs, as she mentions "sucking on a pill." She knows that she is hooked, but she is not willing to take the responsibility for her addiction as she says she would kill anyone who blames her. The verse signifies how destructive and toxic her addiction is.
The chorus then shifts the focus towards the singer's partner, who has returned to town. She can feel his presence, which makes her feel alive, but she is also aware that this will only complicate her addiction further. She warns others not to stand in their way, as they are both having more than just a flirt. The repetition of "mess around" at the end of the song maybe suggesting that they will continue to have an affair with no care for the consequences.
