The lyrics of Moriarty’s song "Belle" tell the story of a man who left his lover (Belle) to travel to Texas in his car. After being there for only three days, he received a letter informing him that Belle was gravely ill and in danger of dying. He immediately returns home and finds her unconscious. He sells his horse to pay for her medical treatment, but despite his best efforts, she eventually dies. The lyrics are a bittersweet reflection on the singer's love for Belle and the regret he feels over leaving her.
The song’s lyrics evoke a sense of longing and regret. The singer’s deep love for Belle is evident in the way he sacrifices everything to try and save her life. Even though he ultimately fails, the memory of her lives on in his heart. The repetition of the line “Si j’ai une belle ici, belle” (If I have a beautiful girl here, beautiful) emphasizes the singer’s attachment to Belle, and the way he sees her beauty in everything around him.
