The Big Country
Moross Jerome Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Midnight cowboy, midnight cowboy
See the lonesome midnight cowboy)
Once his hopes were high as the sky
Once a dream was easy to buy
Too soon, his eager fingers were burned
Soon life's lonely lessons are learned
Hearts are made for caring
Life is made for sharing
Love is all that's left in the end

(Midnight cowboy, midnight cowboy
See the lonesome midnight cowboy)
Once his hopes were high as the sky
Once a dream was easy to buy
Too soon, his eager fingers were burned
Soon life's lonely lessons are learned
Hearts are made for caring
Life is made for sharing
Love is all that's left in the end
Love can turn the tide for a friend
Love can hold a dream together
Love is all that lasts forever
Love is all that's left in the end
Love can turn the tide for a friend
Love can hold a dream together
Love is all that lasts forever

Love can hold a dream together
Love is all that lasts forever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Moross Jerome's song "The Big Country" capture the melancholic image of a midnight cowboy who had high hopes and dreams but ultimately became a victim of life's harsh realities. The verses describe how the cowboy's enthusiastic and ambitious dreams were easily ignited, but then quickly turned into bitter disappointments. He learned the hard way that life can be cruel and unforgiving, and that it takes more than just hope and dreams to succeed.

The chorus emphasizes the importance of love and care in life, as they are all that truly matter in the end. The cowboy's loneliness is palpable, and the repeated phrase "See the lonesome midnight cowboy" adds to the sense of sadness and despair that permeates throughout the song. The final stanza brings a hopeful note, suggesting that love can still make a difference and hold a dream together.

Overall, "The Big Country" is a poignant reminder of how life can be both beautiful and devastating, and how love and care are the things that truly matter in the end.

This is absolutely the best rendition of this, stirring, compelling, breathtaking theme. Listen to all the others on You Tube and see if you don't agree. Each note is played for all it's worth by an inspired world-class orchestra, arranger and conductor. Each fortissimo stresses the grandeur of the view of yet another jaw-dropping art work of the great spirit, while mankind's modifications are overlaid by the orchestra's mezzo-piano. The stress of the tympani over the snare drum imparts another dimension of majesty . Other versions insert an intermezzo here and there to suit the conductor's needs. This version does not. It's straight by the book, note for note. My pick for outstanding western theme song and score of the 20th century. It's too bad the movie itself couldn't keep up with the score.

I also find it an electrifying rendition that lends itself to a flight of fantasy.

This wonderful piece of music brings to mind my journey to the United States of America in 1995 (flying from New Zealand). Flying over the Grand Canyon was a wonderful highlight. Every time I hear it I think not only of the Grand Canyon but also of our wonderful Southern Alps of the South Island of NZ
