While "Good" earned the band critical notoriety and substantial underground cred, they did not -- with this release or any subsequent -- break into the mainstream. After the release of Good, the band replaced Dupree with Billy Conway, a former bandmate of Sandman. Morphine's 1992 release of Cure for Pain, promoted by heavy touring, received some mainstream positive attention, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide and spawning a chart hit in many countries with the single Buena
Subsequent releases include Yes and Like Swimming.
On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman collapsed on stage in Palestrina, Italy, a suburb of Rome. He was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the scene. He was 46. Morphine released The Night -- arguably their best effort -- posthumously in 2000.
After Sandman's death, the remaining band members reformed and continued to record as Twinemen and later as The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band
In 2004, the Mark Sandman box set Sandbox was released by Hi-n-Dry, Mark Sandman's own label. It contains two CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased material spanning Sandman’s musical career. The DVD features clips from early Sandman shows, interviews from the Morphine tours, and various videos from other Sandman solo and group projects, such as Treat Her Right.

I Had My Chance
Morphine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I had my chance and I let it go [Repeat: x 2]
Well if I ever have myself another chance like that
I'm going to grab it and I won't look back [Repeat: x 2]
Sometimes I'm too careful
I walk just like I'm carrying a hand grenade
Ticking ticking ticking in my hand
It's going tick tick tick tick ticking in my hand
Tick tick ticking in my hand
And if I ever have myself another chance like that
I'm going to grab it and I won't look back
Yea if I ever have myself another chance like that
I'm going to grab it and I won't look back [Repeat: x 2]
In Morphine's song "I Had My Chance," the singer reflects on a missed opportunity and expresses a commitment to not make the same mistake again. The repetition of "I had my chance and I let it go" emphasizes the regret and sadness of losing an opportunity. The singer acknowledges that if they ever have another chance like that, they won't hesitate to take it and move forward without looking back.
The second half of the song adds a metaphor of walking around with a ticking hand grenade in their hand, representing the anxiety and fear of taking risks. This metaphor highlights the idea that sometimes being too careful can be just as dangerous as taking risks. The song ultimately ends with a reaffirmation of the desire to not let another chance slip away.
"I Had My Chance" is a powerful introspective song that speaks to the universal experience of missed opportunities and regret. It encourages listeners to take chances and live life to the fullest.
