While "Good" earned the band critical notoriety and substantial underground cred, they did not -- with this release or any subsequent -- break into the mainstream. After the release of Good, the band replaced Dupree with Billy Conway, a former bandmate of Sandman. Morphine's 1992 release of Cure for Pain, promoted by heavy touring, received some mainstream positive attention, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide and spawning a chart hit in many countries with the single Buena
Subsequent releases include Yes and Like Swimming.
On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman collapsed on stage in Palestrina, Italy, a suburb of Rome. He was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the scene. He was 46. Morphine released The Night -- arguably their best effort -- posthumously in 2000.
After Sandman's death, the remaining band members reformed and continued to record as Twinemen and later as The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band
In 2004, the Mark Sandman box set Sandbox was released by Hi-n-Dry, Mark Sandman's own label. It contains two CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased material spanning Sandman’s musical career. The DVD features clips from early Sandman shows, interviews from the Morphine tours, and various videos from other Sandman solo and group projects, such as Treat Her Right.

And that's the day I throw my drugs away" - Mark Sandman

The Saddest Song
Morphine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My first day my first day back in town
The clouds up above they were humming our song
Humming humming our song
My biggest fear is if I let you go
You'll come and get me in my sleep
My biggest fear is if I let you go
Come and get me
I set my course sailed away from shore
Steady steady as she goes
I crash in the night two worlds collide
But when two worlds collide no one survives no one survives and
The reddest of reds the bluest of blues
The saddest of songs I'll sing for you and
My biggest fear is if I let you go
You'll come and get me in my sleep
My biggest fear is if I let you go
You'll come and get me in my sleep
Come and get me come and get me in my sleep
Come and get me come and get me in my sleep
The lyrics of "The Saddest Song" by Morphine describe the singer's return to town and the fear he has of letting go of someone he loves. The clouds above are personified as humming their song, hinting at the emotional connection shared between the singer and the person he is addressing. The biggest fear that the singer has is that if he lets go of this person, he will come for him in his sleep. This shows the depth of the singer's attachment and dependency on the person in question. He is so deeply affected by their presence that he cannot even escape from them in his dreams.
The chorus of the song reinforces the singer's fear of letting go - he is so afraid of the consequences that he cannot make the necessary move to break away from this person. The imagery of "two worlds collide" and "no one survives" adds to the sense of doom and finality that the singer feels. He is trapped in the relationship and cannot see a way out. The saddest of songs that he will sing for this person is a metaphor for his own self-destructive tendencies, which prevent him from moving on.
Overall, "The Saddest Song" by Morphine is a poignant narrative of unrequited love and the fear of letting go. The use of personification, metaphor and imagery add depth and emotion to the lyrics, while the resounding chorus reinforces the singer's emotional vulnerability and lack of agency.
