While "Good" earned the band critical notoriety and substantial underground cred, they did not -- with this release or any subsequent -- break into the mainstream. After the release of Good, the band replaced Dupree with Billy Conway, a former bandmate of Sandman. Morphine's 1992 release of Cure for Pain, promoted by heavy touring, received some mainstream positive attention, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide and spawning a chart hit in many countries with the single Buena
Subsequent releases include Yes and Like Swimming.
On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman collapsed on stage in Palestrina, Italy, a suburb of Rome. He was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the scene. He was 46. Morphine released The Night -- arguably their best effort -- posthumously in 2000.
After Sandman's death, the remaining band members reformed and continued to record as Twinemen and later as The Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band
In 2004, the Mark Sandman box set Sandbox was released by Hi-n-Dry, Mark Sandman's own label. It contains two CDs and a DVD of previously unreleased material spanning Sandman’s musical career. The DVD features clips from early Sandman shows, interviews from the Morphine tours, and various videos from other Sandman solo and group projects, such as Treat Her Right.

And that's the day I throw my drugs away" - Mark Sandman

Morphine Lyrics

Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not lookin' at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
I know it drives you crazy
When I pretend you don't exist
When I'd like to lean in close
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Don't worry I'm not lookin' at you
Don't worry I'm not lookin' at you
Gorgeous and dressed in blue
Don't worry I'm not lookin' at you
I know you see me see you
As you see me walk on past
When there's nothin' more I'd like to do
Then come in close and hear you laugh
Though we haven't even spoken
Still I sense there's a rapport
So whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Yeah, whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Whisper me your number
I'll call you up at home
Hmm, whisper me your number
The song "Whisper" by the band Morphine is a melancholic, yet seductive song about a man who is fascinated by a woman that he sees. In the first stanza, the singer establishes that he is drawn to this woman who is gorgeous and dressed in blue, but he won't look at her directly. He talks about how it drives her crazy when he pretends that she doesn't exist and muses about how he would like to run his hands against her lips. Even though they haven't spoken, he feels like there is some sort of connection between them.
In the chorus, the singer asks the woman to whisper her number to him, so he can call her up at home. He repeats this request several times, emphasizing the intimacy of the act of whispering. He reassures her that he is not looking at her, making the request even more tantalizing.
In the second stanza, the singer acknowledges that the woman sees him too, but he simply walks on past, knowing that he would like nothing more than to hear her laugh. He again emphasizes that even though they haven't spoken, there is a sense of rapport between them. The song's intrigue and seduction are heightened by the deliberate use of restraint and subtlety throughout the lyrics.
Overall, "Whisper" by Morphine is a song that speaks to the allure of attraction and the tantalizing nature of secrecy and suggestion. It suggests that sometimes the most seductive moments can be those that are left unspoken, hinted at, or only whispered.
