Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself
Morrissey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the price
Very closely
Some men here
They have a special interest
In your career
They want to help you to grow
And then siphon all your dough
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
You'll never believe me, so
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
Some men here
They know the full extent of
Your distress
They kneel and pray
And they say
Long may it last
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
Bad scenes come and go
For which you must allow
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
Don't rake up my mistakes
I know exactly what they are
And what do you do?
Well you just sit there
I've been stabbed in the back
So many many times
I don't have any skin
But that's just the way it goes
The lyrics to Morrissey's song Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself can be interpreted as a warning to someone to be careful and not to trust blindly. The opening lines "The sanest days are mad" could mean that even in seemingly rational and normal situations, there is still a level of madness that lies beneath the surface. Morrissey advises the listener to find out for themselves what lies beneath the surface of things, and to pay attention to the price that may come with it.
The next verse suggests that some people may have ulterior motives and that they may be trying to exploit the listener for their own gain. The line "then siphon all your dough" emphasizes this point. Morrissey is warning the listener to be wary of those who might seem too eager to help or too interested in their career. The glass hidden in the grass could represent the hidden danger, or the hidden truth, that the listener needs to uncover.
The chorus "You'll never believe me, so why don't you find out for yourself?" highlights Morrissey's frustration at not being believed or trusted. He has been stabbed in the back many times, and the listener must learn to trust their own instincts.
Overall, the song is a cautionary tale about the dangers of blindly following others and not taking the time to investigate situations for ourselves.

And what do you do?
What about you?...
Well you just sit there
...do you just sit around and judge me without doing anything yourself?
I've been stabbed in the back
I've experienced repeated betrayals and backstabbing from people I trusted...
So many many times

I don't have any skin

@Petrarka17
This song and the whole album is a masterpiece, as good as anything by The Smiths.
@SpenceMPD
I think this one of his best solo album, from top bottom...i do like you are the quarry too since he took a break for like what 6,7 years.. but I did/do enjoy this album very much.
@Mudbugaudiopro
Yeap
@UnitedSoundVideo
I agree! Why don’t you find out for yourself 😁
@davidgriffiths2924
Even better than 'The Smiths' he's written more and sold more than 'The Smiths' give him the credit he deserves...
@davemiller8215
careful Sparky....thats a fairly brazen and subjective view to which you are surely entitled....and yes, VAUX is great...and as nearly always, Moz is amazing here as well; but the supporting cast here is not nearly as good as Johnny Marr and friends....not even close//FACT
