No
Morte Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Find the end, let us start again
Feelings lost now surge as oceans
So grey she rises to the world
And her name shattered years ago
Scattered with the northern snow
Fragments hidden well within our minds

Till the rains fall no more
Till the nights no longer find us here alone
Till the rains fall no more
Till the night no longer finds us here alone

In death's eyes sorrow lingered once
Seeing her life torn apart
The shackles fell to see her free to walk the earth
In her eyes life is present still

Through the day I watch her sleeping
I hold her close forever more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "No" by Morte present a melancholic reflection on the aftermath of a deep loss. The singer invites the listener to "find the end" and start anew, but the past seems to haunt them like a dark, tumultuous sea that threatens to engulf them. The person they are mourning for is referred to as "she" - a nameless figure whose identity has been shattered and scattered like pieces of ice across the frozen north. The pain of losing her is still present even years later, and memories of her are hidden deep in the recesses of their mind.

In the second stanza, the lyrics shift to a more positive tone, as the singer expresses hope that the rain will stop falling and that they will no longer be alone at night. This desire for a brighter future is tempered, however, by the recognition that the past cannot be undone. Death has cast its shadow over the singer's life, and the memory of the person they lost still lingers in their sorrowful eyes. Yet there is also a suggestion that this person is now free - the metaphor of "shackles" falling implying that perhaps they were held back by some kind of external burden or pain. Finally, the lyrics end on a note of tender, comforting love, as the singer watches the person they lost sleeping and holds them close, never wanting to let go.
