Control
Moses Mayfield Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I would hold onto you
but I release, I revoke
I don't' need you
if you could open up your eyes to see
every night you're out cutting yourself,
your daughter bleeds
and I'll go, alone
all my life I
I wanted to tell you
wanted to tell you more
all these nights I've
told myself that
you were the only one
who could change this wrong into right
who could make this black into white
if you don't like the way I'm living today
I'll keep it in mind
as I casually dismiss all you say
you don't listen,
you just preach away
shut my eyes, grit my teeth
while you piss in my face
and I'll go, alone
and I'll go, alone
all my life I
I wanted to tell you
wanted to tell you more
all these nights I've
told myself that
you were the only one
I don't care about it
I don't mind
I've seen you through
a million times
I, I lose
control
all my life I
wanted to tell you
wanted to tell you more
all my life I
wanted to tell you
I wanted to tell you more,.
The song Control by Moses Mayfield is a powerful depiction of the singer's struggle with a toxic relationship. The lyrics suggest that the singer has been holding onto the relationship for a long time but is now ready to let go. The opening line, "if I could find a reason, I would hold onto you," suggests that the singer is looking for any reason to hold onto the relationship, but ultimately decides to let go. The singer is tired of being preached to by the other person and is frustrated that they don't listen to him. The line "shut my eyes, grit my teeth while you piss in my face" can be interpreted as the singer feeling helpless and frustrated, as if he is being treated badly.
The second verse suggests that the other person is not only toxic for the singer but also for their daughter. The line "every night you're out cutting yourself, your daughter bleeds" suggests that the other person is harming themselves and, indirectly, their daughter too. The singer wants the other person to see what they are doing and to stop.
Overall, Control is a song about standing up to toxic relationships and finding the strength to let go. The lyrics suggest frustration, anger, and pain, but also a sense of empowerment and freedom.

if I could find a reason
I wish I had a clear justification for holding onto you.
I would hold onto you
If I could find a valid explanation, I'd keep you close by my side.
but I release, I revoke
However, I'm letting go of you and taking back any promises I made.
I don't' need you
I've realized that I can do without you.
if you could open up your eyes to see
If only you could see clearly and understand.
every night you're out cutting yourself,
You're hurting yourself and others every single night.
your daughter bleeds
And as a result, your own child suffers.
and I'll go, alone
I'll move on and travel through life by myself.
all my life I
Throughout the entirety of my existence,
I wanted to tell you
I've yearned to express myself to you,
wanted to tell you more
To say more than what I've already shared.
all these nights I've
During all those nights when I was alone,
told myself that
I convinced myself that,
you were the only one
You were the sole person who could right the wrongs in my life.
who could change this wrong into right
You had the power to transform the negative aspects in my life into something positive.
who could make this black into white
You had the ability to turn my darkness into light and guide me through difficult times.
if you don't like the way I'm living today
If you're unhappy with the way I'm living my life currently,
I'll keep it in mind
I'll take your opinion into consideration,
as I casually dismiss all you say
But ultimately, I might ignore your advice and continue on my current path.
you don't listen,
You don't listen to me,
you just preach away
You lecture me instead of having a real conversation.
shut my eyes, grit my teeth
I'll close my eyes and clench my jaw tightly in frustration.
while you piss in my face
As you spout out your advice, it feels as though you're being disrespectful and belittling me.
I don't care about it
I don't care about your words anymore.
I don't mind
I'm no longer bothered by the way you treat me.
I've seen you through
I understand how you operate and see through the facade.
a million times
I've watched you behave in this manner countless times before.
I, I lose
I find myself surrendering,
control
And losing all sense of power or influence.
all my life I
Throughout the entirety of my existence,
wanted to tell you
I've yearned to express myself to you,
wanted to tell you more,
To say more than what I've already shared.

I saw them open for Pete Yorn in early 2007 and I was hooked. What a great record... and he's followed it up with some pretty great solo EP's.

Hard to believe a band this talented with music this freakin' good couldn't have had enough listeners to have stayed together. I grew up during the 60's/70's musical renaissance. I've heard the best. These guys were at the top.

Agreed!

check out Matthew Mayfield on Youtube, that is the lead singer of this band. he went solo. his solo stuff is just as good, alittle slower and more acoustic. but still same great voice.

It's WAY TOO SAD this band broke up. Maybe if they had been around a little longer during the onset of internet music? I've been rockin' out way longer than must of you chumps! Woodstock? Yeah!. This song rocks out energy as much as any I've heard for the last 5 decades--Stones, Zeppelin--HELL YEAH!
