Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

War and murder come again, lucky if you die
No way to rescue destiny, scream and curse in vain
You will never be remembered, no one knows your name
When the music changes then all is broken down
Mighty cities laid to ruin, burning to the ground
Murder is become the law, you cannot make a stand
You cannot hide the truth from me I know what's in your heart
Greed and jealousy each equal, all your days now dark
Mighty mountains fall in dust the world falls into hell
Faith in lying prophets, no one to lift the spell
Monsters rule your world are you too scared to understand?
You shall be forever judged and you shall surely hang
We live and scrape in misery, we die by our own hand
And still we murder our own children, brotherhood of man
Blood on all our hands we cannot hope to wash them clean
History is mystery, do you know what it means?
Slaughter, kill and fighting still and murdered where we stand
Our legacy is lunacy, brotherhood of man
We are worse than animals, we hunger for the kill
We put our faith in maniacs, the triumph of the will
We kill for money, wealth and lust, for this we should be damned
We are disease upon the world, brotherhood of man
The song "Brotherhood of Man" by Motörhead is a harsh critique of humanity's tendency towards war, violence, and destruction. The lyrics paint a bleak picture of a world consumed by chaos and lawlessness, where the strong rule over the weak and the only law is the law of the jungle. The first verse describes war as a storm of iron in the sky, and suggests that death might be a lucky escape from the horrors of war. The second verse describes the collapse of civilization, with mighty cities reduced to rubble and murder becoming the norm. The chorus states that chaos now rules the world, and that humans are now part of a "mortal brotherhood of man" where the only thing that matters is power and survival.
The third verse is a condemnation of human nature, with the singer claiming to know what is in people's hearts, and finding nothing but greed and jealousy. The fourth verse describes the downfall of the world, with mountains reduced to dust and people placing their faith in lying prophets. The fifth verse is a clear indictment of people's violent tendencies, with the singer claiming that humans are worse than animals and that they hunger for the kill. The final verse states that humanity is a disease upon the world, and that its legacy is lunacy. Overall, the song is a powerful condemnation of humanity's capacity for violence and destruction.
