Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Dreamed I was blown away
Ten thousand called my name
Asleep at the wheel again
Turn me down, turn me down
Take my head and turn it around
Turn me on, turn me on
Everything I do is wrong
Woke up in hell today
Spoke to the devil, he turned away
All of my friends were there
They didn't have no time to spare
Turn me down, turn me down
Step back and I hit the ground
Turn me on, turn me on
Everything I do is wrong
Out of the night comes a song that I know
Twisted and ruined and black
I can remember the people they were
Nobody knows if they ever come back
Lost in the ashes of time they still sing
Echoes of romance gone bad
I can remember them better than you
I shared the darkness they had
Dead and gone, dead and gone
Woke up in my grave today
I dreamed I heard you say
All of eternity was pain
I laid my head back down again
Turn me down, turn me down
Your lips move but you make no sound
Turn me on, turn me on
Everything I do is wrong
Out of the night comes a song that I know
Twisted and ruined and black
I can remember the people they were
Nobody knows if they ever come back
Lost in the ashes of time they still sing
Echoes of romance gone bad
I can remember them better than you
I shared the nightmares they had
Dead and gone, dead and gone, dead and gone
So long, so long, so long
Dead and gone.
The lyrics to Motörhead's song Dead And Gone describe a sense of despair, hopelessness, and darkness. The song opens with the singer waking up feeling insane and dreaming about being blown away with ten thousand calling his name. The lyrics suggest a disorienting sense of feeling out of control and "asleep at the wheel" of his life, as everything he does is wrong.
The song then takes on a darker tone as the singer finds himself in hell and speaking to the devil who turns away. Surrounded by friends who have no time to spare for him, the singer feels isolated and abandoned, hitting the ground when he tries to turn his life around. The following verse features a nostalgic note, as the singer remembers the people who were "twisted and ruined and black," and recognizes echoes of "romance gone bad." The song concludes with the singer in his grave, dreaming that all of eternity is pain - a fitting conclusion to a song that explores feelings of despair and hopelessness.
