Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

And the sun refused to shine
Then may the shackles be undone
May all the old words cease to rhyme
If the sky turned into stone
It will matter not at all
For there is no heaven in the sky
Hell does not wait for our downfall
Let the voice of reason shine
Let the pious vanish for all times
God's face is hidden, all unseen
You can't ask him what it all means
He was never on your side
God was never on your side
Let right or wrong alone decide
God was never on your side
See ten thousand ministries
See the holy, righteous dogs
They claim to heal
But all they do is steal
Abuse your faith, cheat and rob
If God is wise, why is He still
When these false prophets
Call him friend
Why is He silent, is He blind?
Are we abandoned in the end?
Let the sword of reason shine
Let us be free of prayer and shrine
God's face is hidden, turned away
He never has a word to say
He was never on your side
God was never on your side
Let right or wrong alone decide
God was never on your side
No, no, no
He was never on your side
God was never on your side
Never, never, never, never
Never on your side
Never on your side
God was never on your side
Never on your side
Motorhead's song "God Was Never on Your Side" is a poignant critique of organized religion and challenges the traditional view of God as a benevolent being. The lyrics suggest that if the stars were to fall and the sun refused to shine, it wouldn't matter because there is no heaven in the sky, and hell is not waiting for our downfall. The song argues that God's face is hidden and unseen, and we cannot ask him what it all means because he was never on our side. The song urges the listener to let the voice of reason shine and let right or wrong alone decide. The lyrics say that if God is wise, why is he silent and blind when these false prophets call him friend. The song implies that we are not abandoned in the end, and we are better off without the dogma and abuse of organized religion.
The song was released on Motorhead's 2006 album, "Kiss of Death" and features Lemmy Kilmister's signature gritty vocals and fast-paced guitar riff. The song's lyrics were written by Kilmister and the music was co-written by guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee.
