Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

In the Name Of Tragedy
Motörhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Were you ever young,
Were you ever safe little brother,
Do you see the sense of the evidence,
Are you still part of the struggle,
Did you bang your head,
Did you go to bed,
Does it still feel pretty funky,
In the death machine,
Pity you still think like a monkey,
Bring it up, bring it down til you hit the ground,
Get a rude attitude, turn the world around,
Shall we see, shall we disagree,
Sing it all in the name of tragedy,
Did you ever lie,
Ever wonder why,
Nobody believed you honey,
What a pretty smile,
Drive the people wild,
Wonder who ran off with the money,
Do you ever change,
Is it going to rain,
Will it bring you pennies from heaven,
Do you know the score,
Are you waiting for,
Anxious for the new Armageddon,
Live it up, live it down til we hit the ground,
Cop a rude attitude from the world around,
Shall we see, shall we disagree,
Sing it all in the name of tragedy,
Marbles in your mouth,
What's it all about,
Do you know the name of the winner,
If I was to go,
Would you let it show,
Life is not a t.v. dinner,
If you dream of me,
Will you ever see,
Do you want a piece of the action,
If I wasn't sure,
Would you do it more,
Help me to achieve an erection,
Get it up, get it down til you hit the ground,
Get a rude attitude, turn the world around,
Shall we see, shall we disagree,
All in the name of tragedy,
Sing it loud, sing it out, make the people shout,
Get it all, get it on, get it sorted out,
Be a seer, be sincere, can you really see,
All in the name of tragedy
The lyrics to Motörhead's "In the Name of Tragedy" talk about various aspects of life, including loss of innocence, struggles, lies, greed, and the inevitability of death. The song starts with a series of questions, asking the listener if they have experienced being lost, young, safe, or part of a struggle. The song also refers to banging one's head and feeling "pretty funky," which could be interpreted as enjoying the wild side of life.
The lyrics then shift to talk about deception, with lines about lying and wondering why people don't believe you. The song also references a pretty smile that can drive people wild and the concept of running off with money. In the latter part of the song, Motörhead's signature gritty style comes through with lyrics about getting up and down until hitting the ground, being rude, and seeking tragedy.
The chorus of the song asks if we should sing out and be a part of the tragedy. Overall, the lyrics to "In the Name of Tragedy" seem to be a commentary on the darker side of life, urging listeners to embrace it and live fiercely.
