Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

The king of kings
On your knees, dog
All hail
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Bow down to the
The king grinned red
As he walked from the place
Where the traitor lost both his name and his face
Through the halls and the corridors
Stinging in blood
He tasted his grin and it tasted good
The king took his head
Left him broken and dead
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
The king left none living
None able to tell
The king took their heads
And he sent them to hell
Their screams echoed loud
In the place of their death
Ripped open, they died
With their final breath
They hailed the king
The king of kings
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Bow down to the
Bow down to the king
Into the dirt
His will be done
Now feel your fear
There can be only one
Bow down
Bow down
Bow down
Bow down
Bow down to the
Bow down
Bow down to the king
Bow down
Bow down
Bow down
Bow down
The king is here
Now feel your fear
The king of kings
All hail
All hail the king
On your knees
On your knees for the king
The king of kings
There is only one
The lyrics to the song "King of Kings" by the rock band Motorhead depict a king who is feared and revered by his subjects. The first verse tells the listener to behold the king of kings and to bow down to him. The king is described as grinning red as he walks through the halls and corridors stinging with blood. He has just executed a traitor and left him broken and dead. The chorus instructs the listener to bow down to the king. The second verse describes how the king has left none living and has sent them to hell. The screams of the victims echo in the place of their death and with their final breath, they hail the king of kings. The bridge talks about how the king's will shall be done and how fear is the only thing that remains in the presence of the king.
The song is open to interpretation, but it can be seen as a commentary on power and the fear that comes with it. The king is portrayed as a brutal ruler who has no mercy for those who cross him. His subjects are forced to bow down and hail him, or suffer a similar fate as the traitor. The song is a warning that those who seek power can become consumed by it, leading to a reign of terror.
