Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Lost in the Ozone
Motörhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There is no one on earth to rescue me
The winter storms they freeze me, summer burned alive
I can't remember when another soul passed by
Marooned and stranded on the islands of the damned
There is no one on earth to take my hand
There is no voice to speak, no soul for company
Alone and dying, and a thousand miles from home
I know I never was so broken and alone
I searched the sky for god, shivered to the bone
Drowned in sorrow, lost in the ozone
No hand for me
Abandon me
Wash over me
Watch over me
Drowned forever
Alone and crying, and a thousand miles astray
Alone upon the cruel sea, forsworn and cast away
I turned my face to god, but his face was turned away
Lost in the ozone, nothing left to say
Lost in the ozone, nothing left to say
Nothing left to say
Nothing left to say
Watch over me
The song Lost in the Ozone by Motörhead tells a story of a person who finds himself alone and stranded in an ocean. The first verse describes the singer as a drifter without any hope of being rescued, abandoned by the rest of humanity. The second verse highlights the desperateness of his situation, marooned on an island with no company, no voice and no soul. The sun sets in a bloody scene, which possibly symbolizes the loss of life, death or even the end of the world.
In the third verse, the person has given up all hope, realizing that he may die alone and a thousand miles from home. The imagery of searching for God in the sky, but not receiving an answer to his cries, adds a spiritual dimension to the song. Finally, the chorus echoes the sense of abandonment and helplessness, with the repeated plea of being drowned forever.
The overall mood of the song is melancholic and desperate, with the lyrics conveying a strong sense of isolation and loneliness. The use of ocean imagery creates a vivid picture of being lost in an unforgiving environment. The use of repetition and powerful metaphors makes the song very emotional and potent.
