Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

No Voices In The Sky
Motörhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Think everyone should feel the way they fell themselves,
Rich men think that happiness is a million dollar bills,
So how come most of them O. D. on sleeping pills,
Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, you all know what I mean,
What's the use of a cry for help, if no one hears the scream,
No one hears the scream,
Can't take it with you when you die,
No voices in the sky,
The ones who dedicate the flags to make you brave,
They also consecrate the headstone on your grave,
Ritual remembrance when no one knows your name,
Don't help a single widow learn to fought the pain,
Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, you all know what I mean,
What's the use of a cry for help, if no one hears the scream,
No one hears the scream,
No voices in the sky, confusion blinds the eye,
Can't take it with you when you die,
No voices in the sky,
Take it
Politicians kissing babies for good luck,
TV Preachers sell salvation for a buck,
You don't need no golden cross, to tell you wrong from right,
The world's worst murderers were those who saw the light
Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, you all know what I mean,
What's the use of a cry for help, if no one hears the scream,
No one hears the scream
No voices in the sky, confusion blinds the eye
Can't take it with you when you die
No voices in the sky
No voices in the sky, confusion blinds the eye
Can't take it with you when you die
No voices in the sky
The lyrics to Motörhead's "No Voices in the Sky" speak to the pervasive apathy and self-centeredness of society. The song admonishes those who neglect the struggles of others, instead focusing on their own desires and material wealth. The first verse criticizes the hypocrisy of wealthy individuals who believe money brings happiness yet still succumb to substance abuse. The following verse laments the indifference of those who send soldiers off to war and perform elaborate ceremonies in their memory, yet overlook the struggles of veterans' families. The final verse goes after politicians and religious leaders who exploit their followers for personal gain and misconstrue morality.
The chorus, "no voices in the sky," is a powerful refrain that emphasizes the lack of guidance or support in a society that values individualism over community. The lyrics suggest that people seek to fulfill their own needs and desires, without considering the impact of their actions on others. The imagery of blindness and deafness further underscores the idea that people are not listening to each other or recognizing the consequences of their actions.
