Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

I don't need no comic relief
I don't need to see the scars
I don't need Jesus Christ Superstar
Don't need Sunday television
Ya bet your life I don't need religion
Let me tell ya something else
Don't save no knee-pads for me up there
If your head's alright
Ya don't need binoculars to see the light
Ya don't need no miracle vision
You bet your life you don't need religion
Lemmy-vision!
I don't need no Santy Claus
And I don't believe in fairies no more
I don't need to go to confession
I'm already trying to fight depression
I don't need no exorcism
Bet ya life I don't need religion
Motörhead's song, "Religion", speaks to a rejection of religious dogma and doctrine. The song expresses the singer's determination to live life without the trappings of religion, such as a belief in an all-powerful God, prayer, confession, or exorcism. The first verse of the song outlines the singer's rejection of blind faith and the idea that religion is a crutch for comforting the masses. The song calls out the idea of Jesus Christ Superstar and the exploitation of religion for entertainment purposes in American culture, with the mention of Sunday television.
The second verse of the song calls for a clear sight rather than relying on any kind of religious vision, whether it is through the aid of binoculars or a miracle. This speaks to the idea that religion's supposed ability to provide insight and wisdom is an illusion, and that one can see the truth of the world without relying on religion or the supernatural. The song's title, "Lemmy-vision", in the third verse is a humorous reference to the lead singer and bassist of Motörhead, Lemmy Kilmister, who had a reputation for being a hard-drinking and hard-living rocker.
Ultimately, "Religion" speaks to the idea that living without religion is not a bleak and hopeless existence, but one that is based on clarity, self-reliance, and a lack of blind faith. The song suggests that one can find meaning and purpose in life without relying on religion, and that rejecting religious doctrine can be liberating.
