Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Turned out like all the others, leave me by myself,
That's how it works I guess, and you like all the rest
Guess I can handle it, if that's the way it is
[Chorus]
'Cause I'm in love with rock 'n' roll, satisfies my soul
If that's how it has to be, I won't get mad
And if that's all there is, it ain't so bad
Rock 'n' roll
I never been a one to have no steady girl,
I love the way I live, runnin' round the world
I like to fool around, love to tear 'em down
And if I leave, you love to miss me when I'm gone
[Chorus]
I can't imagine growin' old with anyone
Marching to a different drum, I hear a different song
I swear I love 'em all, I don't care if they're small
I don't care if they're tall, love 'em anyway
The song "Rock 'n' Roll" by Motörhead is a celebration of a life lived on the road, dedicated to the power and exhilaration of rock music. The lyrics suggest that the central character is constantly on the move, never settling down with a single partner, but rather relying on the energy and excitement of rock 'n' roll to fill the void left by love. The first verse is directed at a woman who has left the singer for someone else, but he doesn't seem too bothered by this, as he accepts that this is just the way things are. The chorus is where the song really takes off, with the singer proclaiming his love for rock 'n' roll, which satisfies his soul and makes everything else pale in comparison. The second verse really drives this point home, with the singer declaring that he could never imagine settling down with anyone, and that he doesn't discriminate when it comes to the women he meets. The song ends with a sense of triumph and defiance, as the singer thinks back on all the women he's been with, and seems content to keep on living his life on his own terms.
One possible interpretation of this song is that it's a statement on the rock 'n' roll lifestyle itself, which can often be seen as a selfish, hedonistic pursuit. The constant touring, partying, and chasing after women can leave little room for anything else, and the song seems to acknowledge this. However, it also suggests that the power and passion of rock music is enough to sustain this lifestyle, and that anyone who doesn't get it simply doesn't understand what it's all about. In this sense, the song can be seen as a rallying cry for those who embrace the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, and a celebration of the power of music to transform and transport us.
