Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Motörhead Lyrics

And there will be no morning light,
The human race's foul disease,
Will keep the morning from our sight,
Why can't we say the secret word,
Respect for nothing, fire or flood,
Expect no quarter, no reprieve,
We writhe and grin in our own blood,
No sun just clouds and poison rain,
Raped and freezing,
Victims of the dream again,
Truly our days are darker now,
We lie and cheat, to our own selves,
If we do this, I ask you how,
Can we speak truth to someone else,
There is no way, no road at all,
We are destroyed, by our own plan,
The air we breathe will kill us all,
And no one left to give a damn,
No sun just clouds and poison rain,
Raped and freezing,
Victims of the dream again,
Stay clean, be true,
Do whatever you can do,
Make it soon, or we all die,
Ten thousand years, and all we got is suicide,
If there be Gods, then tell me why,
They make us kill and kill again,
One hundred thousand thousand years,
No mercy in the minds of men,
What is the word that we should read,
What incantation should we say,
How can we ask for justice now,
When all the world is blown away,
No sun, no hope the world is sun insane,
Raped and freezing,
Victims of the dream again,
Stay clean, be true,
Make it soon, or we all die,
Ten thousand years, and all we got is suicide
The lyrics of Motörhead's "Suicide" are deeply pessimistic and reveal the artist's cynical view of the world. The opening line "The night is mine, it burns so black" sets the tone for the song, with its bleak and desperate atmosphere. The song is a reflection of the dystopian world we live in, where human beings are like "the human race's foul disease". The artist is posing the rhetorical question of why we can't say the secret word, implying that the world is so dark that words of salvation wouldn't make any sense. The chorus "No sun just clouds and poison rain, Raped and freezing, Victims of the dream again" further highlights the image of a world that is dark, hopeless, and constantly plagued by sufferings.
The second verse of the song expresses the futility of human attempts to be true to ourselves when lying and cheating pervades our world. The artist asks how we can speak truth to someone else, when we can't even be true to ourselves. The repeated phrase "No sun just clouds and poison rain, Raped and freezing, Victims of the dream again" in the chorus once again establishes the atmosphere of a world where hopelessness and despair reign supreme. The last stanza of the song is a plea to humanity to stay clean and truthful, and to make an effort to save the world before it all ends in suicide.
