Stone Dead Forever
Motörhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You think you see me, in the glass
You think you hear me, you better listen fast
I think I see you, gone to seed
The only reasons were your guilt and greed
You're out there on your own
Your face turned to stone
Whatever happened to your life?
Stone dead forever

It's been a long time, been a long, long wait
And now you've caught your fingers, in the Pearly Gates
You'd better leave your number, and we'll call you
You know your problems, ain't exactly new
The wrong side of the fold
Your touch has turned to gold
Whatever happened to your life?
Stone dead forever

You're a financial wizard, a top tycoon
You're sweet lounge lizard, with a silver spoon
You know you never had it, quite so good
'Cause you didn't know, that you even could
But the time has come to pay
Turns out to have been a play

Whatever happened to your life?
Stone dead forever

Overall Meaning

Motörhead's song Stone Dead Forever is a powerful commentary on the destructive nature of greed and the folly of living a life of reckless excess. The opening line, "You think you see me, in the glass," suggests a confrontation between the singer and the subject of the song. The singer warns the subject that they need to listen to what he's saying, implying that they've been living in denial or ignoring the truth about their own behavior.

The lyrics go on to describe the subject's downfall: "The only reasons were your guilt and greed." The line "Your face turned to stone" paints a vivid image of a person who has lost their humanity and become a cold, unfeeling shell.

The second verse continues the theme of the subject's downfall, describing them as caught between "the wrong side of the fold" and the "Pearly Gates." The singer tells them to "leave your number" and suggests that their problems are not unique. He goes on to describe the subject's former success as a financial wizard and "sweet lounge lizard," but warns that "the time has come to pay" and that their success may have been fleeting.

Overall, Stone Dead Forever is a haunting warning about the dangers of unchecked greed and the fleeting nature of success.

Man, I burned out "Overkill" so badly, this became my go-to MOTÖRHEAD album for years, and is now my all time favorite by the classic lineup. I mean, "Overkill" still rules and all, but this album dethroned it. 👺✨🗡👺

The beauty of it is, how heavy it is , and at the same time, so smooth. That's what really captures me about these guys during this period.
