Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Gonna show you what I'm all about
I'm gonna make your toenails curl
Gonna show you how to make me smile
I'm really into long-legged girls
I was talking to you all night long
Every line was your favourite song
I'm gonna tear ya down, go
Gonna show you what it's all about
I'm gonna shoot ya down tonight
I don't really wanna freak you out
But I'm gonna make ya feel alright
I was talking to you all night through
And I knew you was rolling me too
Gonna shake you till your lips turn blue
I'm gonna tear ya down, ah
Gonna show you how to strut your stuff
I'm gonna make your dreams come true
Gonna show you how to change your luck
I'm really gonna do it to you
I was talking to ya hours and hours
I promised you hearts and flowers
I'll give you supernatural powers
I'm gonna tear ya down, oh
The lyrics to Motörhead's song "Tear Ya Down" exude a sense of confident and dominant sexuality. The lyrics evoke the idea that the singer, Lemmy Kilmister, is in full control, and is determined to satisfy a woman's every desire. The song is about pursuing someone and showing them how to have a good time. From the opening line, "Gonna show you what I'm all about," Kilmister sets the tone for a night of pure pleasure. The use of the German count-in "Eins, zwei, drei, vier" (meaning "one, two, three, four") at the start gives the feeling of a call to arms in possibly a war of love.
Kilmister's lyrics convey a sense of confidence, as he sings about making the other person's toenails curl and making their dreams come true. He speaks of himself as a sexually dominant figure, claiming to be really into long-legged girls and promising to tear the other person down. He sings about having natural powers, and that he will give them to his partner. Overall, the song is a celebration of a sensual, dynamic, and confident persona, one who is in control and can take someone on a wild ride of fun and pleasure.
