Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

Don't go out tonight, don't even try to fight
'Cause I can see, I've got the thing you need
And I'm here to stay, it's gonna be that way
Oh, don't try to run, don't try to scream
Believe me, the hammer's gonna smash your dream
Could be behind your back, I might be on your track
And it might be true, I might be onto you
I'll scare you half to death, I'll take away your breath
Oh, don't try to see, don't you try to hide
Believe me, the hammer's gonna make you die
Ain't that right?
There ain't no way, you'll see another day
I'm shooting out your lights, bring you eternal night
And your eternal tricks, begin to make me sick
The only thing I know, is that you've gotta go
Oh, don't you try it, babe, don't look around
Believe me, the hammer's gonna bring you down
Believe me, the hammer's coming down
Motörhead's song "The Hammer" is a menacing warning against crossing the wrong person. The singer in the song seems to be a dangerous, unpredictable character who is ominously present in the listener's life. The refrain repeats the warning "don't try to run, don't try to scream, believe me, the hammer's gonna smash your dream", leaving no doubt that the singer intends to do serious harm. The verses establish the singer's omnipresence, with lines like "I'm in your life, just might be in your wife, could be behind your back, I might be on your track". The chorus builds to a violent climax, with the hammer symbolizing the singer's brutal power.
One interpretation of the song could be that the singer represents a kind of malevolent authority figure, maybe even the devil, who is warning the listener against trying to escape their fate. The line "let the killers go, don't let your mother know" suggests that the listener might be involved in criminal activity, and the hammer-wielding speaker is there to mete out punishment. The repeated use of "believe me" implies that the singer is trying to convince the listener that their power is absolute and inescapable. The final line, "believe me, the hammer's coming down", leaves no ambiguity about the singer's intentions.
The song's dark, foreboding atmosphere and hard-driving guitars have made it a fan favorite. But it's also notable for its surrealistic images and ambiguous lyrics, which have led to many different interpretations. Whether seen as a warning against sin or a celebration of nihilistic violence, "The Hammer" is a powerful rock anthem that showcases the intensity of Motörhead's music.
