Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

I don't know where I'm going and I don't give a damn.
I say the world is crazy, know there's no one to save me,
I know a few things baby; I know we're in a jam.
Black hole in the sun, I don't like the way we always run,
And if your eyes are closed I better stay awake.
You sleep like an angel baby, but I know you're truly crazy,
You are a mystery, you are a bitch to me,
You don't see why I stay why I don't turn and run.
You think your life is good, but you're a babe out in the wood,
Do what you think you should, sleeping with the gun.
Black cloud on the moon, feels like the rain is coming soon,
The way I feel tonight, you'll never see me break.
You live in constant sorrow, and I refuse to follow,
We might not see tomorrow, waiting for the snake.
I think you know the score, I don't know what we're waiting for,
Hiding behind the door, don't get us any place.
I know that you believe, and so before the freeze,
Before we feel the squeeze, before the monster wakes.
Black death in the room, you sing a different tune,
And it will bring your doom, the city starts to shake.
I see the world is dying, you know I sure ain't lying,
I see you pale and crying, waiting for the snake.
The lyrics of Motörhead's "Waiting for the Snake" suggest a sense of confusion and desperation among the band's members as they try to make sense of their surroundings. The opening lines imply that the singer is lost and directionless, unsure of what he likes, who he is or where he's going. He seems to have given up on the world, acknowledging that it's crazy and knowing that there's no one to save him. Despite this, he claims to know that they're in a jam, which suggests a glimmer of hope or a sense of purpose that he hasn't fully grasped yet.
The theme of uncertainty recurs throughout the song, with references to black holes, black clouds and black death suggesting a bleak view of the future. The lines, "You are a mystery, you are a bitch to me / You don't see why I stay why I don't turn and run" suggest that the singer is in a relationship with someone who's difficult to understand and even harder to love. This person thinks their life is good but is actually lost, like "a babe out in the wood." The singer seems to see through this façade and is desperately trying to resist falling into complacency or giving up completely.
