Mother Earth
Mother Earth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Suffering she bears, yet tender remains
Soul of woman, with wisdom and grace
Willow tree that weeps, sad but not unloved
Cruelest winds of age,
Working their worst where she stands
So much baggage, so much guilt
And the past seems so distant
I forgot how selfless you brought me life
And into your world
And of all the things I could sing of,
Cannot express whats inside of me
The heart of your son is not so cold
Its never forgotten your love

Hold on mother earth
Now its my turn to tend to your needs
Now I comprehend
All the things I hold dear, you gave to me
Hold on mother earth
To see your beautiful face smiling at me
Hold on mother earth
I want to give back your love,
But I dont know how
Hold on mother earth

Patiently she waits, just watching the sea
A message in a bottle sailing on the tide
Her weather-beaten face,
Hides her waning faith
Everything to lose, everything to gain
Take my hand and feel my love
I will heal your wounds
And make dry your tears
And of all the things I could sing of,
Cannot express whats inside of me
The heart of your son is not so cold,
It has not forgotten your love

Hold on mother earth
Now its my turn to tend to your needs
Now I comprehend
All the things I hold dear, you gave to me
Hold on mother earth
To see your beautiful face smiling at me
Hold on mother earth
I want to give back your love,
But I dont know how
Hold on mother earth

Hold on mother earth
Now its my turn to tend to your needs
Now I comprehend
All the things I hold dear, you gave to me
Hold on mother earth
To see your beautiful face smiling at me
Hold on mother earth
I want to give back your love,

Please tell me how
Hold on mother earth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song are a plea from a son to his mother, Mother Earth. The song evokes a sense of environmental consciousness and the pain Mother Earth is going through due to the cruelty of human actions. The first few lines describe the physical suffering that the earth has to bear, but despite this, she still manages to maintain her tender and nurturing quality like a wise and graceful mother. The metaphor of "willow tree that weeps" portrays the sadness and sorrow that Mother Earth feels due to the devastating effects of climate change.

The son expresses regret for taking his mother's love and care for granted and not valuing the beauty she has bestowed upon him. He acknowledges the baggage and guilt he carries as he reflects on how selfishly he has lived his life so far. He promises to take responsibility and be mindful of his actions, making it his turn to tend to his mother's needs.

The last verse is the son's promise to mend the wounds of Mother Earth and return her the love she has given. The plea to hold on exemplifies the sense of urgency and importance of saving the earth. The question - "Please tell me how" - becomes a call to action for the listener to become involved in the protection of the planet.

What a voice. What a song. I listened to this so much - I ran the grooves smooth. Tracy is/was the best.

One of the best blues songs and singers, AND throw in Michael Bloomfield. WTH an amazing band and song. Still top of my list all of these years later.

It was August 1969, and I was at a Be-In in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. I heard music in the distance, and as I got close I heard this song live ..... my first experience hearing Tracey. I went out the following day and bought this album, and I must have worn the grooves far down from all the times I played it. This song was my favorite, but I also had a fondness for Living With The Animals.

I was at the same event - Incredible performance -

Rick Hoppe

I saw them at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium about the same time. All of Tracy Nelsonโ€™s performances are great, but itโ€™s โ€œDown So Lowโ€ with its feeling of aching yearning and loss that really does it for me.
