What Does It Take
Motherlode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What does it take to win your love for me?
How can I make this dream come true for me?
Oh, I just got to know,
Oh, baby, 'cause I love you so,
Gonna blow for you

I've tried, I've tried, I've tried,
I've tried in every way
I could to make you see how much I love you
Oh, I thought you understood

So you gotta make me see,
What does it take to win your love for me?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Motherlode's song 'What Does It Take' are a pleading and heart-wrenching appeal to a lover, where the singer is trying to understand what it would take to make them fall in love with him. He is admitting his deep and passionate feelings for this person, but feels stuck wondering what he can do or say to win their love over. The repetition of the line "What does it take" in the chorus highlights the desperation and longing in his voice.

The second verse speaks of the singer's efforts to make the person see how much he loves them, but he still hasn't been able to get his message across. He may have tried different ways to impress or win them over, but nothing seems to work. Here the singer's voice deepens, and we can hear the frustration in his voice. He is pleading with them to help him, "You gotta make me see".

This song is an emotive portrayal of unrequited love that many people can relate to. The lyrics are simple, but the singer's voice conveys a depth of emotion that makes the words powerful. The song is catchy and memorable but also gives listeners something to ponder and empathize with.

... way ahead of their time, man.
clean excellent superb

I’d rate them equal or better to Tower of Power and Chicago

I was just a teeny bopper when this LP came out.

Too heavy duty for me to relate to and comprehend at the time,
... Now, I’m into it in 2018!

Oh man, this sounds superb! If only the 2019 music scene could be half this good.

Words cannot describe the excellence of that sax.

A excellent band, to be sure. Massively underrated, in my opinion. Especially in the annals of Canadian music. Wish they'd had a longer career together. Who knows what levels they could have achieved? No disrespect but I don't see them as on par with the muscular sound of Tower Of Power.

Harry S. Anchan

Nice. More jazzy and upbeat than the original, but I LOVE "When I Die".

As said earlier, Jr Walker recorded the definitive version of this track. IMO.

GREAT COVER VERSION!

Cosmic Debris

Armen Khatchatrian

Best version. Alton Ellis is good too

My brother had the vinyl album and I finally found a copy on CD. Wish they had reengineered the album. It never had a really "clean" sound to me, on either media. Still, a great album though.
