Days Will Run Away
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had a bad feeling again
Everyone's underground
Somehow it seems better this way
With me not around

I tried to hide all that I was
Everything's ending here
Saw the whole scene slowly dissolve
Nobody wins

And the days will run away before you know it
The lights will dim, the earth shakes
And the whole thing disappears
If you could live a million years in just a moment
Would it hit you even harder

Why is goodbye so hard to say
Everything is caving in
Sever all ties
Like a ghost in the night
As bad as I am

And the days will run away before you know it
The lights will dim, the earth shakes
And the whole thing disappears
If you could live a million years in just a moment
Would it hit you even harder

All that you said straight to the grave
There is no meaning
I really do feel it's better this way
With no one around

And the days will run away before you know it
The lights will dim, the earth shakes
And the whole thing disappears
If you could live a million years in just a moment
Would it hit you even harder

And the days will run away before you know it
The days will run away
And the days will run away before you know it
The days will run away
And the days will run away before you know it

The days will run away
And the days will run away before you know it

Overall Meaning

The song "Days Will Run Away" by Motion City Soundtrack is about feeling disconnected from the world and how time passes by so quickly. The beginning of the song sets a melancholic tone with the line "I had a bad feeling again" and "everyone's underground." These lyrics suggest that the singer is feeling isolated from everyone and the world around them. The line "Somehow it seems better this way/ With me not around" shows that the singer feels it would be easier if they were not present. They are trying to hide from whatever is causing them to feel this way, but everything is ending around them, and they can see the scene slowly dissolving away.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the theme of time passing by so quickly. The singer mentions the days running away, the lights dimming, and the earth shaking, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life. The line "If you could live a million years in just a moment, would it hit you even harder" raises the question of whether we would value our time more if we were able to live a lot longer.

The song ends with the lines "All that you said straight to the grave/ There is no meaning/ I really do feel it's better this way/ With no one around." These lyrics suggest that the singer has given up on trying to find meaning in the things people say and feels better being alone.

Mid April, 2016. I'm stuck up at college listening to Pandora on my phone. Everything is Alright by this band called Motion City Soundtrack starts to play. Thus began my live for this band. I've been pretty much listening exclusively to them for the past month now, working my way through each of their amazing albums, and now that I'm here, the last song on the last album, I finally feel the full weight of their retirement and it saddens me greatly. Best of luck to all of the members in their future endeavors. Thank you so much MCS. You've inspired me more than you will ever know.

+Simon Luna i am so glad you can see them, even just once. i kind of liked mcs but didn't really follow them (MISTAKE!) until july when i saw an instagram post about their so long farewell tour, and that's how i found out about it... and then i started listening to more of their music and realized the mistakes i made and cried a little because i'm in canada and they've already been here for the last time :(

+Rosemarie Wise At least I'll be able to see them once in my life. In the short time I've known them, Justin, Tony, Matt, Jesse, and Josh have inspired me and my music so much, I really don't know what to do with myself. We'll all have to just move on and commit this to memory ;)

+sensesfail10792 No hard feelings here. We're all a bit messed up about it.

I'm having similar regrets at not paying attention sooner too, sure I've known of them for the last 4 years at least (a friend is a big fan) but it wasn't until she was looking for someone to join her at some shows over here and I actually got to see them live that I really "got it". There are bands that I really like but can be happy to have seen just once because well, they just don't "gel" or have the stage presence (or reproductive accuracy of "quirks" in the style of the studio album (if that's what I discovered first)) that give them charm for me. Then there are a much smaller handful of bands that I really like and I would travel (as far as reasonably possible, read within Europe) to go see again and again as much as money and time would allow. These guys would have fallen into the latter category. I least I did get to see these guys twice this week and now I'm just kicking myself about all the shows I didn't realise I was actually missing out on when I didn't need to be. So I kinda do understand the "late to the party" feeling you have about now Simon... I'm currently trying to fight the urge to want to sleep through my "feels" about it... I had a great time, but I could have had so many more...

Simon Luna That's fair. Wasn't trying to offend. I realize now my comment sounds a little caustic. I've been a diehard since 2005 and this breakup has gotten to me

This is the opus of MCS. All their songs have a truth a lot of us feel but can't find the words but this song really did it. It's perfect.

this song is so good the whole world needs to listen to it, and then cry, and then breathe a new breathe of life. Life goes on
