Sunny Day
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She is the queen of anarchy, I am the only one who cares
I met her in Minnesota over some pizza and diet soda
She's into pain and Purple Rain
I'm into robots and music
We're drowning in Minnetonka, hoping to purify ourselves
And I sing,
"Not that I am special, not that you're some work of art,
Let's lose us some sleep and that is somewhere to start."

Let's get, physical!
Try and break our bones tonight.
Let's share chemicals
Try and break our bones
Try and break our bones tonight

She is the gin and I'm vermouth in these mad cocktails of despair
We try hard to keep it sober until the evening just fucks us over
To tell the truth, we're badly bruised,
there is no future and we both are thinkin',
"So this is my dinosaur life...so this is my dinosaur life."

I know that I'm not special and you are nobody's work of art
Let's lose us some sleep and that is somewhere to start.

Let's get, physical!
Try and break our bones tonight.
Let's share chemicals
Try and break our bones
Let's get, physical!
Try and break our bones all night
Try and break our bones tonight

Not that I am special, not that you're some work of art
Not that we're not perfect for each other's fucked-up hearts
Beating through the evening, bearing witness to the ceiling,
Feeling alright

Let's get, physical!
Try and break our bones tonight
Let's share chemicals
Try and break our bones
Let's get, physical!
Try and break our bones all night
Try and break our bones

Try and break our bones
Try and break our bones tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Motion City Soundtrack's song "Sunny Day" tell the story of two people who find comfort in each other's company despite their differences and struggles. The first verse introduces the two characters, with the singer describing himself as someone who cares for the "queen of anarchy" he met in Minnesota over pizza and diet soda. They are both into different things - she likes pain and Prince's "Purple Rain," while he likes robots and music. However, they both feel like they are drowning in the waters of Minnetonka and are hoping to purify themselves. The chorus then urges them to get physical and try to break their bones, possibly in an attempt to escape their emotional pain.

The second verse expands on their relationship, with the singer comparing them to a cocktail of gin and vermouth. They try to keep it together and sober during the day, but eventually give into their despair as the evening wears on. They both know that they are badly bruised and have no future, but try to find solace in each other's company. The chorus comes back again, repeating the call to get physical and try to break their bones.

The final verse acknowledges that neither of them is special or perfect, but they are right for each other's "fucked-up hearts." They spend their evening together, staring at the ceiling, but feeling alright. The chorus repeats again, with the urge to break their bones taking on a new meaning - perhaps as a way to break free from their emotional pain and start anew.
