The Future Freaks Me Out
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm on fire and now I think I'm ready to bust a move
Check it out, I'm rocking steady
Go!

Betty won't stop listening to modern rock
How she hates to be alone
I try to compensate her lack of love with coffee cake
Ice cream and a bottle of ten dollar wine
She says, "Hey, I rock the Haro Sport
I rock the cowgirl blues
I rock too fast for love
I'm footloose in my Velcro shoes
What's up with Will and Grace?
I don't get drum and bass
The future freaks me out."

I'm on fire and now I think I'm ready to bust a move
Check it out, I'm rocking steady
To the beat in my head
It goes oh, oh-oh-oh
I know that she's the only one
I'd rather waste our time together
Yeah, 'cause we can get down

Betty can't quit carving question marks in my wrist
How come we're so alone?
We waste away the days with nicotine and television samples
Of an era we hate to admit we embrace
We fail to represent
We fail to be content
We fail at everything we ever even try to attempt
And so the story goes
As only Betty knows
It's time we take control
(Get down)

Betty, I need you
I miss you
I'm so alone without you
To call up on the weekends with my cellular phone

Betty, it's so hard to relate
To the whole human race
I don't know where to begin
I don't know where to begin
If we can both find a way
To do the things that we say
We might not sit in our rooms
And drink our daydreams away
Betty, I'm a dreamer

I'm not a vicious schemer
Oh Betty, won't you- ah fuck it

Overall Meaning

The opening lines, "I'm on fire and now I think I'm ready to bust a move Check it out, I'm rocking steady Go!" establish a sense of urgency and excitement. The singer is ready to take action, to do something bold and daring.

The song then focuses on two characters: the singer and Betty. Betty is described as someone who constantly listens to modern rock and appears to be lonely. The singer attempts to make her feel better with food and wine, but she still feels alienated from society. She doesn't understand the popularity of "Will and Grace" or "drum and bass," and even says that "the future freaks me out."

The chorus returns, with the singer stating that he's ready to move forward and that he knows Betty is the only one he wants to be with. The second verse sees Betty continuing to feel misunderstood and isolated, carving question marks into the singer's wrist to express her confusion. They both waste their days with vices like nicotine and TV, refusing to participate in the world around them. But the singer feels that if they can work together, perhaps they can make a positive change and stop drinking their "daydreams away."

Overall, "The Future Freaks Me Out" is a song about feeling disconnected from society and unsure of what the future holds. Betty and the singer are lost and searching for a sense of meaning and purpose. Despite their struggles, they find comfort and hope in each other's company.

Just saw these guys live last month. Met them before the show. It was my 13 y/o’s first ever concert. Justin talked with him before the show and then during the last song - this song - they had an unnatural pause during the bridge where Justin thanked the crowd and at the end of the shout-outs he called out my son and talked to him from the stage for a solid 15-20 seconds right before coming back in and finishing the song.

It was the most magical first concert experience that someone could have. Great show by the MCS crew. A truly special night for my kid and me.

Woahhh!

That’s awesome ❤ I’ll never forget how iconic these guys were in my thirteen y/o self eyes. Experiencing that first time at warped tour!! Just like your son will never forget that. Took my little sis ten years ago, and got a great photo together with Justin too. The smile on her face is priceless!! Always love MCS 🤟🙌

@highdeadesigns6424

That's so amazing😭 I didn't even know they were still together! My middle school self is jealous😍
