Time Turn Fragile
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tiny hands, recycled cans, the metal bands, I could not stand
The time you cried and threw your crayons across the floor

These are the things, I think about, when I'm alone without you
I wonder of your whereabouts and hope like hell
You're happy where you are

You used to say that, "You're just fine"
But I still wonder all the time

Hockey games, medical claims, police reports, terrible grade J
I'm so proud of all the things that you've done

These are the things, I think about, when I'm alone without you
I wonder of your whereabouts and hope like hell
You're happy where you are

"I'm alright, I'm alright"
I can see through everything you say, and all the lessons I never learned

You used to say that, "You're just fine"
But I still wonder all the time

Do you still believe in the stories told
To you by my friends and I when you were four years old?
How it got so cold that words just froze
We had to wait 'til summer to find out what was said
One of the best times that we had

I know I say that, I'm just fine
But I hope you wonder from time to time

I was nervous from the start that our muscles might tear us apart
(Are muscles tearing us apart?)
From the words that carve our lives, to the words that take us by surprise
(I was never taken by surprise)

From the sounds that disappear to the changes we begin to fear
(I can hear you clearly)

One day, I'll fail to breathe and all you'll have are memories
(All we are are memories)

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of this song talks about the things that the singer thinks about when they are alone without their loved one. They think about the little things that used to bother them about their partner, like their tiny hands and their love for metal bands. They also remember a time when their partner cried and threw their crayons across the floor. These memories make the singer wonder about their loved one's whereabouts and whether or not they are happy.

The second stanza talks about how proud the singer is of all the things their partner has accomplished. The singer still thinks about their partner all the time, even though their partner used to tell them that they were "just fine." The singer wonders if their partner still believes in the stories that the singer and their friends told them when they were only four years old. The song ends with the singer reflecting on how memories are all we have left when we eventually pass away.

Overall, the song seems to be about the bittersweet nature of love and relationships. We can love someone deeply, but still have doubts and fears about the future. We can be proud of someone and love them despite their flaws, but we never really know if they are truly happy or if they still love us in return.

When I found out this song was supposed to be written from the perspective of his father it made this song that much deeper. Reminiscing on youth while time flies by. Live in the present and appreciate every moment. All we have is right now.

brownpunk

right on brother...sounded like a happy upbeat song but if you read the lyrics it goes deeper!

They recently discovered a blood clot in my dads brain and my aunt just passed from Coved. "One day ill fail to breathe and all you'll have are memories"... Fuck. That hits so hard. I am tired of Motion City being written off as some 2000s pop punk band. They are so much more than that. Already got my tickets to do a 3 hour drive to see them.

Lazy Masquerade

This is definatley in my top 5 Motion City songs, best band evah :D !

Coasters and Culture

It's been nearly 10 years since I lost my Dad. Still think about him always, especially when I come back to this song.
