Bomber
Motörhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't a hope in hell,
Nothing's gonna bring us down,
The way we fly,
Five miles off the ground,
Because we shoot to kill,
And you know we always will,
It's a Bomber, it's a Bomber
Scream a thousand miles,
Feel the black death rising moan,
Because, you know we do it right,
A mission every night,
It's a Bomber, it's a Bomber, it's a Bomber

No night fighter,
Gonna stop us getting through,
Sirens make you shiver,
You bet my aim is true,
Because, you know we aim to please,

Bring you to your knees,
It's a Bomber, it's a Bomber, it's a Bomber

Overall Meaning

The Motorhead song "Bomber" is a hymn to the power and might of warfare. The lyrics are powerful and evoke the feeling of being in the cockpit of a bomber plane, soaring high above the earth, powerful and unstoppable. The first verse tells us there is nothing that can bring this plane's crew down. They are invincible. The plane flies high, five miles up in the sky. The lyrics convey the feeling of power and danger that comes with piloting such a machine. The refrain of "It's a Bomber" is chanted in a powerful, rhythmic way, reinforcing the sense of strength and invincibility the pilots feel.

The second verse continues with the theme of power and death. The "black death rising moan" is a reference to the fear airplane engines induced during World War II. The lyrics 'we do it right [with] a mission every night' highlight the frequency of bombing missions during the war, and the relentlessness of the crews that carried them out. The repetition of the words “It's a Bomber” builds on the pride and confidence expressed in the first verse, making it clear that the plane and its crew are a formidable force on the battlefield. The final verse talks about the potential obstacles the bomber may face, such as a night fighter, but they will not prevent the crew from completing their mission. The lyrics express a little bit of cockiness and bravado, as the crew is sure of their aim and confident they can bring their enemies to their knees.

It's disrespectful to motörhead that they only won a grammy for making a cover of a metallica song. Motörhead deserve so much more love than they get. I swear people barely know who they are

Those who really know MOTORHEAD

Judy, I totally agree. I bet Metallica does as well. But one thing that Lemmy did have is the deep, profound respect of every Hard Rock and Heavy Metal musician out there. The HM industry universally adored Lemmy. As they should.

@@bobmartin4021 I just watched a documentary on Motorhead, where it was said that during their heyday, some of their albums were hitting top ratings in charts, "No Sleep till Hammersmith" was even the #1 in the album charts. I don't think that they cared all that much about grammy awards, they already won prizes without going down as much as Metallica did after St. Anger. (In my opinion, that is, of course)
