Birds
Motorpsycho Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It must've been important,
But we lost it on the way.
Don't know what it could've been,
But it's not here today.
This whole thing's got me shaking like a leaf
Down in the dregs of relief
Sometimes I'm such a coward
I keep lying to myself
I wish I had the guts to tell it
And put it on the shelf
This whole thing's............etc

Why would you wanna
Why would you wanna listen to me
Why would you listen now? (x4)

I see it in your face
And I can hear it in your voice
This time just I think that we
Don't even have a choise
This whole thing's...........etc

Why would you wanna .........etc

If I knew just how to tell you,
I don't think you'd hate me anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Motorpsycho's song "Birds" seem to be about regret and missed opportunities. The singer laments that something important was lost along the way, though they're not sure what it is. They're shaking with relief - perhaps relieved that they don't have to confront what was lost head-on? The singer admits to being a coward, lying to themselves and wishing they had the courage to face their truth. They seem to want to share whatever it is that they've been keeping inside, but they're afraid of how it will be received. The repeated chorus of "Why would you wanna listen to me / Why would you listen now?" speaks to this fear of vulnerability - if they haven't been truthful before, why should anyone believe them now?

In the second verse, the singer is talking to someone specific ("I see it in your face / And I can hear it in your voice"). This person seems to be important to the singer, and perhaps they've been hurt by the singer's lack of honesty. The singer acknowledges that they don't have a choice but to face this person and whatever it is they need to confront. They repeat the chorus, suggesting that they're still afraid of being vulnerable and unsure of whether they'll be able to communicate effectively. The final line, "If I knew just how to tell you, / I don't think you'd hate me anymore," suggests that the singer has done something that has caused this person to dislike them. They wish they could explain themselves and make things better.
