Children of the Revolution
Moulin Rouge [Original Soundtrack] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If it's good for your mind
Well, you can twist and shout
Let it all hang out
But you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, no...
Well, you can tell a plane
In the falling rain
I drive a Rolls-Royce
'Cause it's good for my voice
But you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, no...
Ladida, ladida didadada
Ladida, ladida didadadadada
Ladida, ladida didadadadada
Ladida, ladida...
You won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, you won't fool the children of the Revolution
No, you won't fool, no no, baby, you won't fool the children...
No no, you can die before you have the time
You're gonna make it, oh ladida
Ladida, ladida didadada
Ladida, ladida didadadadadaa
The song "Children of the Revolution" in the Moulin Rouge soundtrack is a cover of T-Rex's 1972 hit. The lyrics revolve around the idea of being true to oneself and not trying to fool the new generation, hence "the children of the revolution." Initially, the song describes the freedom of the young and how they have the right to "bump and grind" and "twist and shout" without feeling judged. The lyrics also describe the futility of trying to impress the youth with material possessions, such as a "Rolls-Royce." Ultimately, the song repeats the central message that the children of the revolution cannot be fooled.
This song's lyrics have a timeless quality that speaks to different generations' relevance. In essence, the youth of each time period takes part in a revolution that is unique to the time. The song's meaning goes beyond simply being about the youth's rebellion, however; it is also a statement about society's superficiality and the value of staying true to oneself despite outside pressures. The music video highlights these characteristics with the unique setting of Moulin Rouge, with high-energy dance performances that end with a powerful message of sticking to one's beliefs/ideals despite whatever comes.

The one thing I especially love about Moulin Rouge is that the music is all over the place. I never would have expected a song like this to be in the same soundtrack as El Tango de Roxanne, but it strangely works.

The music always makes me think of cool, badass entrances from movies. Like Endgame when all the Snapped people come back and start yelling to charge Thanos. Or Breaking Dawn when Alice and Jasper walk into the clearing in their cool outfits and have this insanely confidant walk and facial expressions

Man this song is pure awesomeness and I loved it when it was in the movie

Yeah this introduced me to the song back in the day and it's not a bad cover at all but I find myself going back to the T. Rex version more for the raw power.
