Elverum explained this change in an 2003 interview with Discorder, asserting that "Mount Eerie is a new project. The Microphones was completed, or at least at a good stopping point. I did it because I am ready for new things. I am new."
As Mount Eerie, Phil typically works with synthesizers, guitars, drums, and the accenting voices of Mirah, The Blow, and fellow K-Records/Anacortes, Washington friends. Mount Eerie's album "Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie" was also the first recording released on Phil's new label, P.W.Elverum & Sun. All songs from that recording are available for free download in the Internet Archive.

Mount Eerie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The foggy sea was loud behind it.
It's foggy breath breathed it's water into our lungs,
And we curled up around it,
And we were deafened by the sound
Of foggy waves crash,
It's still ringing in my ears.
But my ears and lungs are nothing
I saw something in the sand
That swept me off my feet.
Oh! The Blow!
And rising back in misty wave throws,
Forever churning up it's boiling strength.
And with the faster that the car flies,
Stick your head out of the window,
And feel it beating hard and sweet into your face!
And in a moment when the time slows,
The air gets so wide and thick and fuels a force
That blows a whole right through the chest.
Oh! The Blow!
The lyrics of Mount Eerie's song "(Something)" explore the visceral experience of being surrounded by fog near the ocean. The air is so thick with fog that it becomes difficult to see and breathe, and the waves crashing in the background are deafening. Despite these overwhelming sensations, the singer is drawn to something in the sand that captures their attention and captivates them.
The use of sensory language emphasizes the physicality of the experience, with the fog and waves almost becoming characters in their own right. The repetition of "Oh! The Blow!" adds to the sense of being swept up in the moment, with the word "blow" possibly referencing the powerful gusts of wind that often come with fog and ocean waves. The final lines of the song describe a moment where time slows down and the force of the wind and air becomes almost palpable, creating a different kind of blow that hits hard.
Overall, "(Something)" is a song that paints a vivid picture of a sensory experience, with the singer being overwhelmed by the physical sensations of their surroundings. The focus on the power of nature and the elements creates a sense of awe and reverence that is palpable throughout the song.
