Elverum explained this change in an 2003 interview with Discorder, asserting that "Mount Eerie is a new project. The Microphones was completed, or at least at a good stopping point. I did it because I am ready for new things. I am new."
As Mount Eerie, Phil typically works with synthesizers, guitars, drums, and the accenting voices of Mirah, The Blow, and fellow K-Records/Anacortes, Washington friends. Mount Eerie's album "Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie" was also the first recording released on Phil's new label, P.W.Elverum & Sun. All songs from that recording are available for free download in the Internet Archive.

Mount Eerie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yes, you move me to tears
Over and over
Every time I get it settled, you excite it
Every time I get my face dry, you sing
It's not meant to be a strife
It's not meant to be a struggle uphill
Now I know, so now I no longer fight it
Come on in little floating head at the door
Who are you? Who are you?
Who has come to fill my room?
Well come on, welcome in
It's not meant to be a strife
It's not meant to be a struggle uphill
I'll no longer hide it
Yes, the way you say it stirs me to the core
Every time, no matter what
No matter who I think you are
Every time I hear you say undo I do
And the tears fall
And the universe is shown
But who are you, voice in headphones?
The lyrics of Mount Eerie's song Voice In Headphones speak about the singer's relationship with the voice they hear in their headphones. The voice seems to be a source of comfort for the singer, capable of moving them to tears and exciting them. The singer describes their previous attempts to resist the power of the voice but now accepts it and welcomes it with open arms.
The repeated refrain "It's not meant to be a strife, It's not meant to be a struggle uphill" highlights the idea that the relationship between the singer and the voice is not meant to be difficult or painful. Instead, the voice is a source of liberation that helps the singer to access greater knowledge about themselves and the universe.
The singer's question "who are you, voice in headphones?" reveals a sense of wonder and curiosity about the source of the voice. The voice seems to be a kind of mystical presence that guides the singer towards greater self-awareness and understanding.
In all, the lyrics of Voice In Headphones describe a profound and transformative relationship between the singer and the voice in their headphones. It is a relationship based on acceptance, wonder, and openness to the mysteries of the universe.

"It's not meant to be a strife. It's not meant to be a struggle uphill." We're grieving with you, Phil.

I am just hearing this song for the first time, after being a fan of both Bjork and Phil/mount eerie for well over a decade... They both have been there for me in some of my most emotionally intense times, specifically during experiences with lsd and mushrooms, and even more specifically- listening to 'undo' during an experience with lsd. these are very treasured memories, and this song is bringing a lot to the surface. peace and blessings.

i went to buy tickets to see phil at a record store in SLC. my brother and i bought the tickets at the counter and started looking at the records there. then i noticed some guy bringing in amps and other equipment to set up for phil. after he came back in the 3rd time bringing stuff in i realized it was just phil himself. when he started to walk back out i asked him if he was phil elverum and we had a good conversation and the show was awesome. phil fuckin rules
