The band was formed in Westchester, New York in 2005 by Gregory Dunn (guitar/vocals) and Nicholas Pizzolato (drums). A self-titled demo EP was leaked to the public in early 2006 and their debut album Pneuma was released independently in early 2007. Later that year, Frank Graniero (guitar/vocals) and Mitchell Lee (bass) completed the band's line-up. In 2008, Pneuma was reissued by Deep Elm. In Fall 2008, the band self-released the EP "Foreword".
Their second full-length album Waves was released May 10, 2011 on Triple Crown Records. The band has stated that Triple Crown Records let them record and write the album however they wanted to. The lyrics were written by Gregory Dunn, some of which, like Pneuma, were again written about his friend that had died. He has stated that this is the last album with lyrics about his deceased friend. With the album they wanted to create an album that would reflect how they play live.
The band's self-titled full length album was released on September 10th, 2013 on Triple Crown Records.
In December, 2015, Moving Mountains announced a split EP with the band Prawn, as well as a three city tour the weekend of December 18 to 20. Cities included were Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Cambridge. They toured with Prawn and Moneen.

Chords
Moving Mountains Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Inside of my head
A different point of view
From the things I've said
Did you think I could?
Did you think I could?
And I found a new love
A different set of skin
Stretched across my bones
Did I find you now?
Did you find me now?
Well I don't know
What your name is
But all I know
Is your heart exists
Yeah all I see
Is change in me
Was it in the chords?
Is it in the words I spoke?
And so maybe we'll say
Let it rain down on both our heads
And let it fall hard and wash away
Just to know that nothing is okay
Well I can't control
The worst of this
But I don't know
Why we talk like this
I want to say so much more
Is it in the chords?
(It's in everything I say)
Is it in the words I spoke?
(It's in everything I see)
Is it in the chords?
(It's in everything I mean)
Is it in the words I spoke?
The lyrics to Moving Mountains' song "Chords" present a message of introspection and change. The singer describes finding a new home inside their own mind, and a new love in their own blood, suggesting that they have undergone a transformation of sorts. The repetition of the questions "Did you think I could?" and "Did I find you now?" suggest a sense of doubt and uncertainty, as if the singer is still coming to terms with their own changes and their place in the world.
The second half of the song turns more existential, with the singer musing on the nature of change and the way it is reflected in art – and, specifically, in music. The lines "Was it in the chords? / Is it in the words I spoke?" suggest that the singer is grappling with a sense of inadequacy in expressing themselves properly, as if their words and the music they create are not enough to fully convey their thoughts and emotions.
