The band was formed in Westchester, New York in 2005 by Gregory Dunn (guitar/vocals) and Nicholas Pizzolato (drums). A self-titled demo EP was leaked to the public in early 2006 and their debut album Pneuma was released independently in early 2007. Later that year, Frank Graniero (guitar/vocals) and Mitchell Lee (bass) completed the band's line-up. In 2008, Pneuma was reissued by Deep Elm. In Fall 2008, the band self-released the EP "Foreword".
Their second full-length album Waves was released May 10, 2011 on Triple Crown Records. The band has stated that Triple Crown Records let them record and write the album however they wanted to. The lyrics were written by Gregory Dunn, some of which, like Pneuma, were again written about his friend that had died. He has stated that this is the last album with lyrics about his deceased friend. With the album they wanted to create an album that would reflect how they play live.
The band's self-titled full length album was released on September 10th, 2013 on Triple Crown Records.
In December, 2015, Moving Mountains announced a split EP with the band Prawn, as well as a three city tour the weekend of December 18 to 20. Cities included were Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Cambridge. They toured with Prawn and Moneen.

Moving Mountains Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you died in my dream.
We were both in the grass,
When the wind took you and put you in my past.
So just breathe,
Hold it in and think of me.
Just don't fall back
So carelessly.
I'll find my own - you'll find your own - embrace.
And the worst thing of all,
Was that I couldn't fall.
When I jumped off those cliffs,
Hoping I wouldn't live.
And can I hold on? Can I hold on to you?
And can we both die if the wind is passing through?
So just hold it in, breathe and just think of me.
Don't fall back so carelessly.
When everything is forced in place,
I'll find my own - you'll find your own own.
And the worst part of it all,
Was I could not seem to fall
When I jumped straight off those cliffs
Hoping that I wouldn't live.
The Cascade by Moving Mountains is a song about loss, grief, and the struggle to move on. The opening line, "Well I hope that you know, that you died in my dream", sets the tone for the song's melancholic themes. The singer is haunted by the loss of someone close to them, and in their dreams, they are unable to escape the pain. The use of the word "hope" suggests that the singer wants the person they have lost to know the extent of their grief, but also hints at a sense of futility - they know that the person is gone and cannot hear their thoughts.
The second verse, "And the worst thing of all, was that I couldn't fall", reveals the depth of the singer's pain. They are stuck in a state of limbo, unable to move on from the loss they have suffered. The reference to "jumping off those cliffs, hoping I wouldn't live" suggests that they have even considered suicide as a way to escape their pain. However, the fact that they are still alive is evidence that they were unable to follow through, further highlighting the struggle they are experiencing.
Ultimately, the chorus offers a sense of hope. The singer acknowledges that everything will one day fall into place, and that they and the person they have lost will find their own paths. The repetition of the line "Just don't fall back so carelessly" highlights the importance of staying strong and not giving into despair. In the end, the song is a powerful and emotional exploration of grief, pain, and the human struggle to move on in the face of loss.
