Overall Meaning

Mozart's Requiem is a musical composition performed during a funeral or a memorial service. The lyrics of 'Requiem' appear to be a prayer-like appeal to the Lord to grant eternal rest to the dead and everlasting light to shine on them. The opening line "Requiem aeternam dona eis" means "Eternal rest grant unto them." The overarching theme of the song is eternal love and salvation for the souls of the departed. The Libera me section echoes the anxiety that attendees to a funeral typically have concerning death, judgment, and eternal life. The Dies Irae section describes the Day of Judgment, with a sense of impending doom and the horror that is to come. The lacrymosa section is a plea to Jesus Christ to spare the soul of the dead, with the chorus singing, "Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem" (Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest.)

Remember, merciful Jesus, that I am the cause of your journey; do not abandon me on that day. After wearying yourself by seeking me, you redeemed me by suffering on the cross; let not so much labor be in vain. Righteous judge of vengeance, give me the gift of forgiveness before the day of retribution. I groan like a guilty one, my face reddens with shame; O God, spare your suppliant. You absolved Mary and heard the prayer of the thief; to me you have also given hope. Though my prayers are not worthy, be kind, O good one, lest I be consumed by the eternal fire. Grant me a place among the sheep on your right hand, and separate me from the goats.

Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum Benedictis Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam Mei finis
The cursed are confounded, consigned to the acrid flames; call me with the blessed. I pray, supplicant and kneeling, with a heart as crushed as ashes, take care of my end

That day of tears and mourning, when from the ashes rises guilty man to be judged. Spare him then, O God, merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest! Amen!

Domine Jesu Christe! Rex gloriae!
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory! Free the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and the deep abyss. Free them from the lion's mouth, so that Tartarus may not swallow them, nor may they fall into darkness. But may the holy standard-bearer Michael lead them into the holy light which you promised to Abraham and his seed.

Hostias et preces tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus Tu suscipe pro animabus illis, quarum hodie memoriam facimus: Fac eas Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, quam olim Abrahae Promisisti, et Semini ejus
We offer you, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers of praise. Receive them in behalf of those souls we commemorate today. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death into the life which you promised to Abraham and his seed.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth! pleni sunt coeli Et terra Gloria tua Osanna in excelsis
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts! Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictis, qui venit in nomine Domini
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem Sempiternam Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis in aeternum, quia Pius es
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest. May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord, with the saints in eternity, for you are merciful.
