Mr.Children is one of the most popular bands in Japan. They made their major debut in 1992 with the release of their first album, "EVERYTHING", but it wasn't until one of their singles was used as a drama theme song, like their fourth single "Cross Road", that they started getting noticed. They got their big break in 1994 with the release of their fifth single, "innocent world", which made record sales and earned the Japan Record Award in 1994. Their fourth album, "Atomic Heart", which was released in the same year, is still their top selling album to date. Since then, all their singles have been number one hits in the Oricon charts like "Tomorrow never knows" and "Namonaki-uta", and many of them became million sellers, and they've produced other noteworthy albums.
In 1997, they took a long vacation, and came back to the Japanese music scene the next year with the single "Owari-naki-tabi."
Their sound is essentially a blend of light pop and classic rock. But due to the band's inclination to experiment with various music styles, their sound is constantly evolving. They have delved into various types of rock as well as jazz, blues, folk, country, and dance. Despite this constant change, however, their music has progressed successfully, proving them to be a versatile band that can last.
The main force behind the band is their singer and songwriter, Kazutoshi Sakurai, who composes almost all of their songs. The rest of the band include Kenichi Tahara on guitar, Keisuke Nakagawa on bass, and Hideya Suzuki (Jen) on drums and backing vocals. They also have supporting musicians on keyboards, guitar, brass instruments (trumpet and saxophone), and computer programming for their tours because they usually embellish their recordings.
It must be noted that a good part of what makes Mr.Children's songs unique is Sakurai's remarkable vocal ability. His vocal range is higher than the typical male range, and he sings with a noticeable Western style. Also, it is because he is influenced by the great classic rock artists of the '60s and '70s (in particular, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones) that the band's music usually has a classic rock feel. But being the vocalist of the band doesn't prevent him from sometimes sharing guitar solos with Tahara, or playing them by himself. He also plays the piano and harmonica proficiently.
Tahara and Nakagawa are the quietest members of the group, often choosing to remain in the background when the band appears on TV shows. Jen seems to be the most extroverted member who takes his top off onstage at any opportunity. He also always matches Sakurai's sense of humor. They are all very talented musicians who make vital contributions to the band.
On December 31, 2004, their song "Sign," was again awarded the Japan Record Award, ten years after the first.
Mr. Children has a long-time association with the Toys Factory record label.

僕は探していた 最高の gift を
僕は抱きしめる 君がくれた gift を
The song 'GIFT' by Mr.Children explores the concepts of self-discovery, meaningful existence, and the search for the perfect gift to offer someone special. The opening lines pose the questions of what the most beautiful color and the most shining thing could be, which the singer endeavors to find in the form of the ultimate gift that would make the person he cherishes happy. As he contemplates the best way to show his affection, the singer admits to wanting to discover his true self and understand the purpose of his life. However, he hopes that handing over this perfect gift would give him a moment of clarity and answer some of his queries.
However, the song acknowledges the shortcomings of life's grand questions and situations, as the singer admits to holding onto his gift for so long that it is now crumbled and nearly unrecognizable. The situation becomes more complicated as the singer is confronted with the dilemma of answering a question that demands either black or white when infinite colors exist between the two. This impasse leaves him lost, but he eventually discovers that the vastness and variety of the colors hold more significance than being confined to a binary choice, and he finds the most beautiful color that suits his beloved.
The song concludes with the singer, now at peace with his existence, ready to face any challenge that the journey of life may present to him. He has learned to embrace the moments of inspiration and frustration that come with exploring the unknown and feels that he can carry his own baggage and that of his loved ones. As he offers the perfect gift to his dear one, he affirms that it was his connection with them that led him to search for it and expresses his gratitude for their presence in his life.

What is the most beautiful color?
What is the brightest thing?
僕は探していた 最高の gift を
I was searching for the greatest gift
Imagining you being happy
The true self
They say they want to find it
The meaning of one's birth
They say they want to know it
When my hands pass it to them
I hope they will suddenly solve their mystery
I wonder if they will accept it
Wanting to give it to you for a long time
Because I held it tightly
It has become ruined
The color has completely changed
I can't say it's beautiful in a flattering way
Asking 'answer with white or black'
Being confronted with a difficult problem
In front of the wall that we've hit
We are lost again
But we are lost
In between white and black
Infinite colors spread
Searching for the color that suits you
If I give it a gentle name
Look, the most beautiful color
I will give it to you now
Even if we reach the horizon
A new horizon will just spread out
Should we stop now?
When I ask myself
I still want to keep walking
I heard the answer
Even the luggage that increased without realizing it
I can still carry it somehow
I'll carry it for you too
So stay by my side
My heart will become lighter just with that
At the end of the endless journey
Who is the 'chosen one'?
Even if it's not me
I'll still keep running
I'll keep running
Because the sun is shining down
That's why there are also shadows
All of that has a meaning
If we praise each other
No matter where we are now
We can feel the light
I wonder if you will like it? Please take it
Because of you, I was able to search
I should be the one thanking you
僕は抱きしめる 君がくれた gift を
I will hold on tightly to the gift you gave me
Forever deep in my heart
See, it's still shining
It will keep shining
