Mr. Big combined two popular musical trends of the rock scene in the mid to late 80s: a particular brand of hard rock focused on melodies and listener-friendly choruses made for the arena, and impressive technical proficiency, then called shredding. The seeds for the group were sown when bass player Billy Sheehan (considered one of the top bassists of rock, often thought to be the bass equivalent of guitarist Eddie Van Halen) left David Lee Roth's solo band in 1988. Almost immediately after his exit, Sheehan began piecing together a new outfit, with the help of Mike Varney from Shrapnel Records, a label specialized in the shredding genre. The band comprised Shrapnel artist and former Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert, Pat Torpey on drums, and singer Eric Martin, who had a number of album releases throughout the 1980s with his Eric Martin Band.
By 1989, the newly formed quartet, already regarded as a budding supergroup, had already inked a recording contract with Atlantic, resulting in the release of a self-titled debut the same year. Produced by Kevin Elson and Val Garay, 'Mr. Big' proved a partial commercial success, reaching the 46th slot on the Billboard 200 chart. Lead-off single "Addicted to that Rush", featuring the band's aggressive guitar and bass playing, also brought the group some mainstream attention, reaching the #39 slot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
Despite causing a buzz among musicians, the album didn't quite cross over to a mainstream rock audience stateside, though Mr. Big was an immediate smash success overseas in Japan. The band's breakthrough came with their second album, 'Lean Into It', in 1991. It featured two power ballads that established the band as a total commercial success: "To Be With You" and "Just Take My Heart". The group also released arena rock songs that have remained staples of their live set for years, such as "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind".
Other releases followed, 'Bump Ahead' in 1993 and 'Hey Man' in 1996, but the band never replicated its earlier success in the U.S. market. The rise of grunge and nu metal groups damped much of the mainstream's interest in traditional arena-made hard rock. In Japan, on the other hand, they continued to sell out tours, resulting in a number of live releases for the Japanese market throughout their career (from "Raw Like Sushi" in 1990 to Mr. Big in Japan in 2002 among later releases). Paul Gilbert left the band in 1997 to pursue a solo career and eventually reform Racer X. Richie Kotzen, another Shrapnel artist and former guitarist for Poison, was brought in to take on guitar duties, also contributing occasional vocals.
Two studio albums were released by this lineup: 'Get Over It' in 2000 and 'Actual Size' in 2001, which featured the single Shine used in the anime Hellsing. Tensions in the band between Billy Sheehan and the other members, especially Eric Martin, led to the band's demise-- contractual obligations for yet another Japanese tour were fulfilled in the form of a "farewell tour". The multi-million record-selling band broke up in 2002, many years since their last hit in the United States but while still enjoying great popularity in Japan.
In February 2009, as a result of fan-demand and also after several coincidences over the past couple of years that have gradually brought the group back together again, Eric Martin, Pat Torpey, Paul Gilbert, and Billy Sheehan finally announced their decision to reunite.
In September 2010, Mr. Big recorded a seventh album with producer Kevin Shirley at a Los Angeles-area studio. The album (What If...) was released in Japan on December 15, 2010, in Europe on January 21, 2011, and in the US in February 2011. The group's latest album, Defying Gravity, was recorded in Los Angeles in six days, and released on July 21, 2017. Due to Pat Torpey being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he could not play drums fully on the record and played on only several tracks. Matt Starr recorded the drum tracks, while Pat Torpey acted as "drum producer."
On February 7, 2018, drummer Pat Torpey died from complications of Parkinson's disease at the age of 64. His last show took place at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on November 23, 2017. A memorial show took place on May 23, 2018 at The Canyon in Agoura Hills, California, with former member Richie Kotzen as a special guest.
Let Yourself Go
Mr. Big Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Somebody tell me who's that, what's that
It's the man with the silk drawers stuck up his buttcrack
Don't even front and try to ask who is this
Cause my name rings more bells than a Jehovah witness
Stronger than listerine, moppin' up rappers like Mr. Clean
Oh Lord, the Kane just hit the scene
Booyaka bo buck, rappers have no luck
Cause ain't no way in the world the Kane could ever, fade
I'm stayin' on top of this thing, in order for me to get, paid
And anyone comin' to me for a battle is gettin', slayed
Whenever it comes to the lyrics I'm rappin' I got it, made
So back up off me, cause yo' rap
Have no hap' so slow dat and act like you know dat
Cause you can dream about bein' this up to par
But not even Johnny Mathis can tell you what your chances are
Competition I'll drill em, and definitely out-skill em
To make the long story short, I kill em
Cause I face em like Jason, bizarre
And when I come through, it's like tchk tchk ahh
[Chorus]
Come on, heidi heidi heidi hoe
And yo I got the funky flow
So let yourself go!
Heidi heidi heidi hoe
And yo I got the funky flow
So let yourself go!
Come on, heidi heidi heidi hoe
And yo I got the funky flow
So let yourself go!
Come on, heidi heidi heidi hoe
And yo I got the funky flow
So let yourself go!
[Verse 2]
Givin' you mo', ready to go, kickin' the flow, rippin' the show
Comin' to blow, check out a pro, look at the glow, act like you know
Left the lonely lonely through lyrics loose in me
Leave the lowlife left lingerin' lost like
Anything you can imagine done to a microphone I did it
Ripped it, flipped it, hit it, split it, let it so dig it
But don't make me get ill, or chill, cause if I exercise my skill
Rappers'll hit the floor like Johnny Gill
The smoothest soloist, with this to exist to bliss
And diss who risk to test this
Cause this ain't no game, I treat you like
A picture of my ex-girl, and rip that ass out the frame
I come pursuant, pursuant, pursuant, pursuant
And step it to him, to him, to him, to him, to him
I leave a rapper's career ruined, ruined, ruined, ruined
And watch him fade like my voice is doin', doin', doin'
Ease back when I attack
Your poetry is wack so don't ask for no slack
Cause I'm tell you straight up, I'ma bring it son
You want poetic justice go see John Singleton
Because a battle ain't no thing to me
And I don't look nothin' like Tarzan
So don't think you can swing with me
Just let the Kane take control, I'd like to know
If you really ready for some super dynamite soul!
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
So what's this? A new attitude, you're tryin' to act rude
You saw menace and now you in a gangsta mood
What are you kiddin' me? That's the heart of stupidity
If you want to be a gangsta, join the mafia in Italy
Fakin' and frontin' on stage like you're hard
I hope when you get to Detroit, the real thugs gon' pull your card
Flashin' guns like you got somethin' to prove G
What, you want to be in the next John Singleton movie?
You're sayin' that you're buckwhylin'
But don't convince me, convince the brothers on the island
Otherwise just forget it, unless niggaz that did ten years
Say you a gangsta, I ain't wit it
Yo, I raped his mother, yo, I shot and killed him
Is that what you want to get across to the children?
I guess you're not gonna be happy til it's for real
Four year old kids, doin' drive-bys on Big Wheels
Or maybe you want to see it be more fatal
Like Kindergarten kids, tryin' to cook crack with Play-Doh
Now I don't mean to take the fun out the jam
I just want some to understand about the gun in the hand
We gotta show our people how to live equal
Peace out, I'm catchin' folks on the sequel
[Chorus]
"Let Yourself Go" by Mr. Big is a rap song with a strong message about not pretending to be someone you're not, and not glorifying violence. The lyrics in the first verse reference the rapper's ability to out-rap any competition, and how rap battles are no match for him. The chorus is a repetition of "Heidi heidi heidi hoe" which serves as another way of saying "let yourself go," or to let your guard down and be true to yourself. The second verse touches on the rapper's skill set and how he's able to destroy "wack" rappers who try to face him in a battle. Lastly, in the third verse, the rapper speaks on fakeness and pretending to be someone you're not, and how glorification of violence is detrimental to society, especially the younger generation.
Overall, this song takes a strong stance against falsehood and violence, urging listeners to be true to themselves and live in peace. It also showcases the rapper's talent for rap battles and clever wordplay.

Хаски Джек
I wanna know why do you stop
When you half way there
Are you afraid to dust all the ghosts of your back
Now is the time free yourself
From the cross that you bear
Nowhere to run, tangles and chains
You made it, yeah you can think of
Walk to the edge when you want something more
Let yourself go
Don't hang on for saviors just sufferin' the fall
Let yourself go
Let yourself go
So you've been burnt, and you're not alone
Right from the ashes
Caught in a trap the soul in your head,
If you face it, you'll escape it.
Walk to the edge when you want something more
Let yourself go
Don't hang on for saviors just sufferin' the fall
Let yourself go
To a place, where there's life, life after love
Let yourself go
You can made it and I'll be waiting
Walk to the edge when you want something more
Let yourself go
Don't hang on for saviors just sufferin' the fall
Let yourself go
No more running in circles and closing your eyes
Let yourself go
Step out of the shadows and into the light
Let yourself go
Walk to the edge when you want something more
Let yourself go
Don't hang on for saviors just sufferin' the fall
Let yourself go

Wow. Just how exactly did I miss this song? It's good! Everytime I hear Eric's voice I have to admire Billy for his good taste as he was the one to call and ask Eric to start the band 😋 Can you imagine if Eric auditioned for Van Halen as he was supposed to?
