Vanity Fair
Mr. Bungle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're not human
You're a miracle
A preacher with an animal's face

In your sexy
Neon smokescreen
Lie the supersalesmen of vanity
Even your shadow worships you
In your jungle solitude

With the orgies of the sacrament
And the seal of flagellants

You know God saves those who save their skin
From the bondage that we're in

I'm elated
I could cut you
And remove the sheath of your ignorance

Bless the eunuch
And the Skoptsi
Will you hurt me now and make a million?

Say cheese, baby
We all love you
It's a cheap world and you don't exist

Slit the fabric of the right now
Spread your legs and wear the crown

Tell me how long, lord, how long?
'Til I get my beauty sleep?

Now the hourglass is empty
The moment of my de-sexing

Cut it, cut, cut, cut
Cut this cancer from my soul

Now that I've made it
I'm finally naked
I'm finally naked

Yeah, I made it
I'm really naked

Overall Meaning

The Mr. Bungle song "Vanity Fair" is a critique of the culture that pushes people to pursue superficial things like beauty, fame, and wealth. The lyrics speak to the idea that people who chase after these things are not fully human, but rather are like animals, driven by base desires. The lines "You're not human, you're a miracle, a preacher with an animal's face" indicate that these people are something special, but not in a positive way. They are preachers, spreading the gospel of vanity, but their animalistic nature makes them less than human.

The lyrics go on to describe how these "super-salesmen of vanity" use a "sexy neon smokescreen" to sell their message to the masses. They are worshipped by their own shadows, alone in their jungle of solitude. Meanwhile, they engage in orgies and self-flagellation, hoping to save themselves from the bondage of their own desires. But the singer sees through this façade, and wants to "cut" the personification of vanity that stands before him. He also references the Skoptsi, a religious sect that practiced castration, as a way of critiquing extreme measures people may take to achieve physical perfection.

The chorus asks how long the singer will have to participate in this culture to achieve his own version of success. The final lines indicate that he has achieved this success, but has lost something in the process. He is now naked, both literally and metaphorically, and wonders if it was worth it to pursue vanity at the cost of his soul.
