Home Of The Brave
Mr. Lif Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Open your minds without question
No doubt, tell me what you're thinking about
Let's try to set aside pride and clout
Can you believe I feel the same exact way you do?
You truly do believe these modern ways have fooled you
Systems exist so we never meet each other
Pretty soon from now that I'll long the word "brother"
If you don't know, that means more than two
I'll tell you what they'll do
They'll pull over, hunt you over
Kick your ass, nightstick to your shoulder
I know it's unjust, as if it wasn't enough
If you try to fight back they're locking your ass up
And Chuck already told you that a cell is hell
But I'm waiting for the phone so I'll sit for a spell
Call the guard, tell him I'm a piece of God
With no beliefs in his streets or his boulevards
I eat, read so my mental is hard
And the heat from my anger just melted the bars
They reach for their guns so I put them to sleep
Break the chains and put the shoes back on my feet
He's on the loose with no discernible scars or marks
Just the mind of Mandela and the heart of Rosa Parks
So I dip, time to see the governor and mayor
Tell them life ain't fair and see if they care
Well they do, but only if they are the heir
So they appear to have a heart and make a flair
But they haven't done shit for us and that's a fact
Their only function is to keep the funny money where it's at
And it causes pain, stress
Ask me if we need a different way of life (yes)
Headline: Bush steals the presidency
He needs the backing of the media what could the remedy be?
The country's headed for recession reminiscent of the Great Depression
Are lives worth a world of power? Easy question
Planes hit the towers and the Pentagon
Killing those the government wasn't dependant on
It's easy to control the scared so they keep us in fear
With their favorite Middle Eastern demon named Bin Laden this year
Bush disguises blood lust as patriotism
Convincing the living to love "Operation Let's Get 'Em"
But when he realized we don't support their attacks
They needed something to distract, hmm, anthrax
This further demonizes Afghanis
So Americans cheer while we kill their innocent families
And what better place to start a war
To build a pipeline to get the oil that they had wanted before
America supported the Taliban
To get Russia out of Afghanistan
That's how they got the arms in
They're in a war against the Northern Alliance
And we can't build a pipeline in hostile environments
Here's what your history books won't show:
You're a dead man for fucking with American dough
They killed several birds with one stone
While you're at home with anti-terrorism up in your dome
But my eyes are wide open and my TV is off
Great, 'cause I save on my electricity cost
And you can wave that piece of shit flag if you dare
But they killed us because we've been killing them for years
In "Home of the Brave", Mr. Lif raps about the harsh reality of the United States' modern ways where people are forced to live in a society where systems exist to prevent them from encountering each other. The song expresses the idea of true expression and self-expression, and talks about the struggle of finding one's identity amidst the restraints of a biased society. Lif believes that people need to open their minds without question and try to set aside their pride and clout to see the world through different lenses. He also touches on the unjust treatment of black people by the police, the corruption in the political system, and the hypocrisy of the country's involvement in international affairs.
Lif is very critical about the war in Afghanistan and the United States' involvement in it. According to him, the country supported the Taliban to get Russia out of Afghanistan, and later on, they waged a war against the same group. He also talks about the American government's use of fear to control the people, and how they give people false enemies to rally against while ignoring the true issues that plague the nation such as poverty, police brutality, and racism. To Lif, patriotism is being used as a disguise for blood lust, and the powers that be only care about keeping the funny money where it's at.

Occasionally, every now and then, I just need to hear Home of the Brave.
Then I listen to it about 5 times straight.
The only thing harder than the beat is the lyrics. Lif foresaw the 2008 Credit Crunch well before even most economists were starting to get a tad nervous about the more than decade in the making property bubble.
Perfectly articulated the puddle deep concern of the US authorities for racial justice, the crookedness and fallibility of the presidential election process (read ''The best Democracy Money can Buy'' by Greg Palast which clearly documents the exact methods used to steal the election for W with documents to back up) and the hypocrisy of framing the Taliban as terrorists when they had been trained and equipped by the US in the Cold War and had absolutely nothing to do with 9-11. Even Al Queida were associated with the CIA and have been linked to agitation in the Balkans ahead of the war there. Also on a route of a proposed pipeline. Just a coincidence obviously.
Not to mention the TV BS machine. Anthrax in the mail!? 🤔
Super sketchy shizzle.
Anyway, I'll probs disappear forever soon for typing this on the internet so goodbye and good luck to any discerning real ones still listening to this absolute gem 💎
@machenga
maybe i'm just getting old (probably) but it's nice to hear a stripped to the bone beat with an artist like Lif who delivers a clear and understandable message
@johnonymousmith

Powerful ballad by LIF. RESPECT

Never heard more true words my friend. Why is this concept so hard for people to understand? Especially musicians; to be a good musician you have to be well - rounded. That requires all styles of music. It's not hard to enjoy other types of music, even if they are weird at first, some things are just an acquired taste. Thanks for spreading some good words, they are too rare in this day.
@Sapsche
I think the fact, that he used a sample from Laurie Andersons "From the air" is REAL good/creepy!
