Society
Mr. Lou Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, he stands in front of me
And he's staring manically
Screaming
Oh society, what have you done to me?
The ground I've tread so many years
All this blood and sweat and tears
Just to be inside your mould
And do just what I'm told
If only I had been so bold
But now my body's getting old
And time is oh so golden
If only it could be frozen

But you took it away from me
Oh society
You took it away from me
Oh my liberty

Oh you took it away from me
Oh society
You took it away from me

When you brainwashed me with formulas of how I should be
Shaped me and raped me of my individuality
Schooled me and fooled me
Told me what I could and could not see

Took me and shook me
Of my urges to be free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mr. Lou's song "Society" speak of a man who is disillusioned with the society he lives in. He feels as if his entire life has been spent trying to fit into society's mold, always doing what he's told and never daring to be bold. As he stands before a society that has stripped him of his individuality and freedom, he screams out in frustration against all that it has taken from him.

The singer in the song has spent so many years trying to fit into the mold that society has created for him, putting in so much effort to achieve what he believes is expected of him. He feels as if he has been brainwashed and molded to think and act a certain way, robbing him of his personal freedom and sense of self. He regrets not being more daring and standing up for himself earlier in life, as now, he feels as if his body is too old and he has too little time left to make a change.

Through his lyrics, Mr. Lou critiques the restrictive rules and norms of society that hamper personal expression and individuality. The song urges listeners to question the mold that society tries to fit them into and promotes the idea of breaking free of the social constructs that can limit one's potential.

While driving from Wisconsin to Alabama in I-65 south I passed the exit back in 2022 of April and I thought I wanted to go and exit there and drive and see what it is for myself. I was terrified the vibe was that strong that I just wouldn’t go and look. 😮 I kept on my route but I did want to go my spirit and Intuition wouldn’t let me and this is when no one knew where or who BG was yet! ❤
